black australorp - cockerel or pullet?

dutchbunny, it's hard to tell from your pics, but males will have red combs and wattles sooner than pullets.

Too early but if I had to take a guess, looks like two pullets so far. My 4 weeks old BA has much bigger and redder comb and wattles.

There is not much comb/wattle development, but she is looking a bit red. Could just be the pics, so it's hard to say, but probably a pullet. You should know for sure in another week.

I quoted the post below which is on the previous page. You can see how obvious some boys are, and the girls are still very pale. The first and last ones are definite cockerels. The only definite pullets are the 4th (by the waterer) and 5th pics. The rest are kind of in between and harder to predict, so watch yours over the next week and see what direction she goes.

OK, any help would be appreciated on sexing my 4 wk olds.



I know this is a bad angle, but it is the best I have on hand. Let me know if more is needed.

I am pretty sure this guy is a cockerel, I am just wanting verification.





I am wanting to start finding homes for any cockerels I have, living in a neighborhood I am not trying to have angry neighbors.

When you said you tried to catch it and it kinda lowered its body, mine generally do that around 15 weeks or so (point of lay) and this means they are female. They hunka down as if you are a rooster, when you corner them and it makes it easy to pick them up. So if that's true (and I think she looks like a girl) then she would def be a hen and not a roo.

We have a black australorp and in the sunlight the feathers look iridescent green. I don't have a good picture to show this, but I was told that is one of the features of this breed, which is why my son wanted it...he named it Sprite (like the green soda bottle).

I have 4 black australorps around 3.5 months old. Just by comparing them to mine I would say that the original chicken in question is a rooster. He is very beautiful!
