Black Bears

We have bears that come around once in a while. With chickens we are certain that eventually they will just demolish the run and coop. Whe we built the run and coop we made it predator proof for everything except bears. For that we use a perimeter fence that is electric and goes completely aroung the run and coop. It uses our existing electric in the coop and is on metal T-posts with insulators. I have five wires beginning at 6 inches, up to 40 inches. Three of the wires are hot and the other two are grounds. I just completed the electric fence today so I do not have pictures but if you want more info I will be glad to help.

When we do let them out to free range they cruse all over the place. Generally they do not hang around the coop, unless it's egg time. If we are out in the yard I unplug the fence all together. They will get a small zap if they do touch it, but not like a wet nose would.

Chickens are pretty well insulated by their feathers from getting popped. There are occasional stories of birds being killed by electric fences, but that is on the continuous charge fences, not the pulsating charge fences. Just be aware of that when you get your charger.

I have several bears around my place spring through fall. They have never bothered my chickens or turkeys or the coop. Once, while on a vacation, I left a garbage can with feed outside the coop for the neighbor to feed the chickens. A bear carried the can a way, but that was the only problem they have given me.
I have predator concern, but bears are not one of them.
