Hello, so about 5 days ago one of my roosters began exhibiting blood from his vent along with a stinky discharge. By the time I noticed it, it seemed very advanced and I wasn't sure if it was from red mites or vent glen or what. Also, it seemed as though his insides were falling out of his vent so I had to gently push them back. up. I have soaked him and have been treating him with an antifungal for a few days but his vent is DRY and crusty and will not close. He has been fine, energy-wise until today. I just found him sitting in the dirt by himself which is weird because he never leaves his girls. What is worse is that his comb has turned black. Now we did have some extremely cold weather the past two nights but they have been in their coop overnight and none of the others have any issues with their combs. I am afraid he is he is going to die or something and I need help. I am posting a picture but it is very graphic. The area around his vent currently looks better than the pic but the vent is still awful and he is still having a discharge, albeit less smelly than it had been.

I have been treating my 3 girls too because they seemed to have super early stages of the same thing. Not sure if it was due to just his gunk rubbing off on them or if he had indeed passed it along.

I don’t know that it is. What my help them feel all little better is if you soak them I warm epson salt water. After you soak then for about 15-20 minutes take them out and if they have any lose scabs you have to take them off. It might bleed but that only means you are getting to new pink tissue. You shouldn’t be pealing of the whole scab in one day. Any poop should be off because of the soaking. You should apply Neosporin ointment to scalp and around scab to constantly keep moist. One of my birds have a problem like that. She is almost better now, the picture below is her vent in the beginning.

Thank you for the reply. Any additional thoughts on his odd behavior now and the black comb? Could it be a side effect from what is going along with his vent?

The behavior would be because he doesn’t feel well. Keep a eye on her eating and drinking if you can. If you notice that he isn’t eating of drinking you will have to syringe feed him. If you have probiotics you should add some to his water. Don’t worry if you don’t you can just give him a small amount of pain yogurt (I personally use a fruit flavored one if he won’t eat the plain.) I am not a expert on any of this and condos I really don’t know. Just out of curiosity how old is your bird? My sebright Nugget has a straight comb and it had recently turned black. She is fine and happy (were I like I have no cold weather.) Just remember I am not an expert on this.

he is only 8 months old and was so super healthy. I tried to syringe feed him earlier but it was rough.

Yes they really don’t like syringe feeding, one of mine got sour crop and hated it. Can you send a picture of his comb? I don’t know what cased it in my bird, but sometimes it is just the comb darkening. When a new comb grows it grows is red or pink. I have noticed that comb when a rose comb gets older is sometimes darkens. I am not a expert on any of this but I try to help.

I am extremely sad to say that my beloved Curly passed away yesterday. I am at a loss for exactly what went wrong. I believe I should have began syringe feeding him far sooner, before he actually exhibited lethargy. 3 days ago, he was active and still crowing and guarding his girls. 2 days ago he got a blackish comb and was very lethargic. After advice, I began syringe feeding him and brought him inside so I could keep 100% eye on him. He slept in my room with me and died sometime in the night between 4 and 7. I don't get it. He was such a healthy young boy. Then in a whirlwind he is gone.

Thank you for your input on the situation. I really appreciate it.
