Black Copper Maran Eggs

Oh my goodness, what beautiful birds! I hope to have any one of my babies turn out that handsome, no matter what their line!! Some are getting a pretty brown color blend on their new little wing tips, others just have the white....they're all from very dark eggs though. We'll have to see. I wish I had some from Bayhorsebonne as well, though, those are awesome birds! One week old today/tomorrow!

That roo is "Lightning" and he was given to me by adeledamate. She bought eggs off ebay from bayhorsebonne and had some technical difficulties with her incubator and only ended up with a single egg that hatched, and it was a roo. Well, going WAY above and beyone, bayhorsebonne hatched out another six babies for adeledamante and gave them to her free of charge. When Ligtning began to crow, she had to place him in another home because of zoning. She posted on here and I didn't answer for a day just to give other people a chance to get a super roo, because I already had two from the same breeder. Well, day two, I just couldn't stand it any more and asked where she got her eggs from, and when she said Donna in Norco, I was all over it and we met halfway and she gave me Lightning and two other baby roos from the clutch Donna hatched for her. Now I have five roos and three pullets! I won't be keeping them all. I am going to grow them out and see which two or three I like the best and place/sell the others. Let me tell you, when she pulled Lightning out of her car, my eyes about popped out of my head! I don't think I've ever seen a prettier cockerel. It was love at first sight! Thanks adeledmante. Thank you, thank you THANK YOU for letting me have Lightning!

So, in answer to your question, the "girls" that came from the same batch as Lightning are back several posts, four of them perched together, and the four of them walking in the garden with the raised beds. Those pullets are from Donna in Norco, aka bayhorsebonne. I can't say enough good things about that lady. Her birds are top notch, she is top notch, and so good and kind and easy to work with. Good lady!

The thanks definitely go to you onthespot. I was so worried about finding a home for him and when you said you'd take him I was sooooo... relieved. I became very attached to him. He was so friendly. I would sit in the backyard and he would come and sit on my leg to perch. I know he his going to sire many, many, beautiful babies with great temperments.

There's a rooster contest going on here in BYC on one of the threads. You HAVE to enter lightning! He'll win for sure!!

Here is a picture of him as a baby. Sorry so blurry.

Thank you both for posting the information and history on "Lightning". What a heart warming story. He is one handsome roo and it is so cool to see photos of him as a youngster. I only wish that CA was closer to Maryland! I would be waiting for one of those other roos to "grow out" and be culled... he would be heading my way for certain!

Maybe it is time for me to plan a vacation to California!

We live on a farm and vacation is a foreign word around here!

You definitely need to enter Lightning in the Rooster contest.
Put me on the list for your eggs next year if you decide to sell any!
Thanks again for sharing your touching story.

Most certainly, Serendipity, consider yourself on "the list" (which consists of your name only, LOL). When it comes time to choose who stays and who goes, may I contact you also? Never hurts to plan ahead for things like this.

Lightning babies!!! I can't wait to tell my little ones that they will be having Lightning playmates in the future! Wahoo!
Thanks again for keeping in touch and keeping me updated!
You can PM me or send me an e-mail - either way.

Here are the most likely other two roos I will be keeping, but not sure yet. This one is Chester, for the chestnut color in his plumage. He is only two months, three weeks, so don't hold him to the Lightning standard yet, give him a few months to catch up...

And here is "Roo 3", hatched March 25, so named because there are two that are about twins. One has a higher tailset and will probably go to a new home. He also has a prettier face than this one. Oh, and he's not dragging his wing at me, he was just starting to do a legitimate luxurious leg and wing stretch when I was getting ready to shoot.

Here is his near twin, currently known as "Cull1" LOL. Check out his bright red wattles and comb already. He is trying to practice on the girls, but they are not buying his line yet.

Here's Cull 1's body shot.

Awwww, what the heck, here's probably cull 2. May as well show them all. He has much darker plumage with gold, not copper hackles. I really LOVE his tail, his face, his feet, everything, but he seems to be less heat tolerant. Maybe I am just worrying too much and should let him grow up and see. I don't mind having four roos. I can rotate them with different hens and get a lot more diverse genetics that way, find out who throws the darkest eggs. Roo 3 hatched from the darkest egg in the lot I bought. Sigh.... such nice birds, so hard to choose...

Simply gorgeous birds! I am on line for some excellent fertile BCM eggs in about a month or so and I cannot stand the suspense! I am so glad I'll have all of you to ask for help . . .
