I wanted to post some comments on the events that are leading up to the Black Copper Marans being accepted into the APA.

One of the disqualifyling things will be clean shanks/legs. I'm not sure if everyone is aware that the accepted standard is feather legged only.

Now, don't despair, if you have clean legs, you just have to breed to a featherd legged rooster to get a good precent of feather legged chicks. That is not so hard to do.

You also want to have good copper color on the hackles and sickles, not gold. The copper color should not fade to gold, that is a fault, but not a dg.

And always, the egg color has to be at least a 4 to be considered a true Marans. Eggs may lighten up, but should never be less than a 4.

Please cross your fingers & toes that the Black Coppers are accepted in September! Next up are the Wheatens & cuckoos...

thanks a bunch,

Sue

I will, I'm drivng to Blevedere, 13 hours in a Prius! with 8 chickens..probably with the windows open all the way! LOL

I will post as soon as I get home...so lets hope all goes well!
There is a lot of "hype" out there that our standard is not good enough, but, what people don't know,is it was approved the the recent ex-president of the French Marans club. You can't get any better than that!

it was coold in NY today and yesterday the rain at niagra falls , and i only saw 2 marans at the fair .but im back homein virginia after a 9 hour drive from albion
also i went to botavia downs race track and saw for the first time sulkies race and that was a blast . the race track was so fun..... sorry about the spelling

I'm showing 4 pullets, 1 hen, 1 cock & 1 cockerel.

Out of 10 pullets, I got 5 eggs today, so things are going well!
They are crossed pullets, jean roo over Davis hens, and their eggs are acceptable, but hope to put them back on a Davis roo so the eggs color will come back in their offspring. I am really happy with my original hens, and expect their granddaughters to produce equal or darker eggs. The pullets are execellent conformation wise, with nice dark blck feathers & dark copper hackles. No breast color other than black. That is important, as any other color but black on the body is a fault. I hope to see more Marans in APA shows in the future!

Hey randy, was that you at the fair?

The 2 Marans you saw, were from my breeding owned by someone else.

The hen was lacking in copper color, but the roo was very nice I thought.
