Black Copper Marans chicks

Wow, that is pretty high!

I had mine listed at 5.00/chick and some guy bargained me down to 3/chick, saying he could get them for even cheaper. I needed to sell the first batch we hatched so I let him take them for 3/chick. I had a ton of folks wanting to buy more but I had no more to sell. Some person in CA on Craig's list has her BCM hens listed for $45.00 EACH!!

GreenFire Farms lists theirs at 99 each.

I paid $8/each for mine. Davis lines. The seller brought me a couple of eggs from his pullets (and yes, he explained that pullet eggs are probably the darkest, which I knew, but he was honest about it) They are GOOD birds I think.
Big, quiet, gentle, they do eat a lot and lay REALLY BIG eggs about every other day (not that I keep perfect record though) so I wouldn't say they are ideal as far as feed conversion/egg production, but I LOVE them. Unfortunately, at $8/chick straight run, I got 3 hens and 5 roosters LOL they all look the same until the boys start to get their combs around 5 weeks.

Did you end up buying the chicks? I am not too far from Ocala, and there is a local guy/Gal selling chicks for $10 a pc in Inverness,Fl but they are Blue and Blue Birchen Marans off of Davis lines...

This is all foreign to me, but if you checked out those and weren't happy I can share the info for this other person..... Who knows maybe they are the same..lol

I also wanted to mention , they claim they are sexed for that $10 and are 2 weeks old.

I am on a yahoo chicken group for CA and boy what tense feelings there are about the black copper birds, breeding, egg color etc. Folks talking lawsuits and such! I really wanted those pretty dark eggs but will have to settle for the cuckoo marans Im picking up today that shipped from Ideal. I hope they are so light you cant tell them apart from other brown layers.

I have a black copper marans hen, and she lays a nice dark egg. She's a beautiful hen. A heavy gal, and she's very vocal and does fly on occasion if she gets excited. (Which surprises me because she's a big girl.) She also has gone broody before. She's shy, but never mean.

Ask the breeder to see some eggs from the mother of the chicks you plan on buying. Then you might have an idea of how dark your eggs will be once they start laying. The eggs should be nice and dark if this breeder is charging $10 per chick, I would think.

I think you will enjoy them! I love mine!

I went last night and met with the guy. He had a super awesome set up and about 100 chicks (diff breeds). Everyone looked healthy and clean. He even showed my the adult chickens and their area (the same healthy and clean). He showed me the eggs and they were a nice brown but he told me he wanted $15 for each chick (I really think it was a case of...I really don't want to sell them but I will for a high enough price). So I didn't get them...too much for a chance of getting a ton of roosters. So I did get 6 cuckoo manrans, 5 barred rocks, 2 frizzles and 1 cochin bantam for $3 bucks a chick. Pretty decent especially knowning u are getting good healthy chicks. Bonus...He had this super incubator and no longer needed his smaller ones and sold them both to me for $25

So next week in our area they are having a poultry swap and they will be there and he offered to sell me his B Copper maran eggs for $2-3 (he said 3 then said he would make me a deal after we spoke for a while) an egg and I will get them from him at the swap (this gives me time to do some research and get everything set up)

They were super neat people and I plan to do business with them in the future. So I may get my BCM one way or another.

Caddy - Corner - Chick...I would like the name of the guy you know...I loved sexed chicks

I am always happy to meet new chicken breeders. So far I know a good silkie lady in Dunnelleon.

Thanks for all the info!!

Those don't look like my black copper marans. Mine are 3 weeks old now and growing like weeds. They hatched on January 10th. Here are a few pictures of them along with a few barred rocks and a silkie. I have 12 marans and Im thinking at least 4 are going to be roos.

I just put 7 BCM eggs in my Brinsea last night, so I'm pretty excited to see what I get.

Last spring I hatched 2 sets of eggs that I bought from a Marans breeder. The first batch, I only had 3 survivors (my fault - humidity problem). I ended up with a BCM roo, BCM pullet, and a White Marans (TOTALLY white).

The second batch had 2 Splash Maran eggs and 2 Blue Marans eggs, all 4 very dark eggs. Of that hatch I ended up with a roo and pullet of each color.

So, now the BCM rooster is my only rooster, and he is gorgeous and good with the girls. I'm trying to figure out who is laying which eggs. I am only getting one dark egg, and confirmed a couple days ago that is my BCM pullet. So, I have a Splash and a Blue that came from dark eggs that are NOT laying dark eggs.

I'm getting some pretty copper eggs, and I'm guessing they're from the Marans pullets. The original eggs were from the Davis line, according to the breeder.

BCM hatching eggs go for upwards of $40 a dozen on CL around here. I'm hoping to add a few more pullets from my eggs that are in the incubator because I just love the eggs and the birds.

Plus, if I can sell a few dark eggs I might be able to buy a little feed. I'm not claiming to be a dedicated breeder, but I do want other people to enjoy having nice birds and dark eggs.
