Black Copper Marans discussion thread

@Chooks man - thanks for your advice. They look even less like BCMs now as they are growing (mossy all over), so I will mention your suggestion to the breeder, since if they keep selling these as pure BCMs I imagine the problem could spread to others. The little one is still a dwarf, so I think there could be something wrong with it internally (this is how they look now):

Wow! Very sad. :hugs
Did you get them locally? Not trying to bad mouth a breeder publically, but could you give a general area so folks in that area can be extra careful about due diligence?

Locally for me is Melbourne, Australia, so I think most of you are safe ;) (I don't want to name and shame, particularly without giving them a chance to comment back - but there are not a lot of options here, so even that probably narrows it down considerably!)

Perfectly understandable. Didn't mean to put you on the spot. I'd be happy to delete the question if you would rather. Bummer that they aren't easier for you to get though.

No worries - if someone here is looking to buy them, I'm happy for them to direct contact me for advice on my experience because I wish I'd had some feedback first! When I get some replacement BCMs in future they will have to be pullets I have thoroughly inspected, but that's presently not possible...

I just wanted to say Hi to everyone. It has been a long time since I have come on BYC. I hope you and your birds are all doing well. My Marans are doing good.

These are a couple of my BCM from this year.
If any of the newer Marans people have questions now is the time to ask them.
Hello Snowbird, I am glad to see you back on the thread. I have been pretty lost on where I am going with my flock. I have a BCM Rooster at this point he is growing in his tail feathers. I have a couple BLCM hens that are light in the blue and not showing any copper. They are Bev Davis line. I am thinking of putting Them together to see if it will darken them. I don't have any pictures but can take some tomorrow. Thank you!

I see no reason why this mating would not work, Just do not breed the BC colored chicks back to your BC Male as the genes will be tainted. These work great in you Blue matings though. I only grew out 87 BC this year and believe they are the best I have ever had. Kept 12 males and 18 pullets. I will drop in here occasionaly.

Thank you, I plan on finding homes for my BBS ameraucanas. Then that will leave me 4 pens to work on my Marans. One pen for a grow out pen. One pen will have my main flock. Then I can select two breeding pens. I will tag my BC that havn't been bread to blues. They will be put in a seperate pen in the future. My BC Maran rooster has no tail now in top picture. Second is a younger picture when he had a tail.
