Goodness, I typically can tell upon hatch...for that first first hours. If I don't see them hatch & drying off, I can't tell until about day 10. HA!

Geebsie - I'm hoping that this guy will be a hopeful. It's way too soon to tell, but he's growing out so evenly, and his 'tude is rockin', so I've got my fingers crossed! It appears that he'll be just the right coloring I'm looking for as well.

The leg skin is transparent without melaniser. THe amount of melaniser in the bird drives the leg color in a correct genetic version, barring that there is no inhibitor like Don keeps pointing out... the amount allowed for SOP has a change so it is allowing more of the slate (melaniser) for the show quality birds. As for me I think I will just refer to the French website.. that hasn't changed since the early 90's. At least until the SOP is in place.. then I may or may not change my mind.

Okay, what do we think about this guy - brutally honest opinions appreciated. I'm not keeping him, as he doens't have enough color for my hens, which have very little copper in their hackles - he's only 14 weeks, so I know he has a ways to go to mature:
