Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Another fellow horse lover here! I'm no trainer, I'm probably intermediate/beginner (w. pleasure and just hacking around.) THey are my therapy. I am equally happy brushing a tail, riding, or scoopin' poop! In fact, before I was asked to be a mod, my title was "scoopin' poop is theraPOOtic!" BA HA AH! I forgot all about that - thanks for bringing that memory back up for me!

I am just catching up on this thread after being gone to the show this week end so I just read your post. I will go out & check my pullets. I have none that present as black. Everyone has colored hackles some waaaaaaaaaaay too much & are mossy & have been put into the layer pen.

Just browsing and found this great thread! Lots of wonderful info.
This is the Rooster I am using right now. Picture from late last year.

Funny this should come up. I just had a phone conversation with a breeder that told me her roosters fertility has, or can be, affected by comb problems & since he recently had a sore on his comb she was treating she needed to check his fertility......................Hmmmmmmmmmmm????? So much to learn I tell ya.......

Hi All - I've been away for a bit, quite busy here on the farm, especially as we go into breeding/laying season. Glad to see a discussion thread specifically for the Black Copper Marans. It took me a while to catch up on the reading - you guys have been busy. Welcome to all the "newbies" also. So glad to see such interest in this beautiful breed. I was glad to see the shank color (for the roos) get changed in the proposed standards from dark slate to a light color grey with pink since that's what most of my roos have. I took a few pictures yesterday and thought I would post them. At this point they are just starting to lay and I've separated them into two breeding pens - one has what I call the best of the best. My two "best" roos (and yes, there's no perfet bird but I picked the two I liked best. There's an older roo and a young cockerl) and several of my best hens. Best meaning I like their copper hackles. I will be starting a list for hatching eggs and/or chicks. My BYC PM box is full so you'll have to write me at my farm website: www.bethelplantation.com or [email protected] if you are interested. The other pen has what I call my "layers" for now including the birds whose eggs have won both the Wisconsin and the Ohio National Shows.

I plan to start a "project" pen with a roo that has too much red in breast paired with the hens who have little copper in their hackles and a pen with a roo that is very dark paired with hens who have too much red. We'll see what they produce.

Ruth, I hate to be the one to tell you but the latest Proposed standard is 2-3 pages back and the leg color is still Dark Slate and bottom of feet pinkish white. Don

I saw one posted in December which listed the lighter color. I've been out of the loop lately but it was posted on one of the Marans sites and had a link here a few pages back. I'll do a little research. Thanks for the notice.

Here's the page that had the link that had the new standards. Of course I didn't check every Maran's site - I was just trusting this one. Are y'all saying this is not the current proposed standard?
