Its hard to say. I have had some cockerels with orange eyes at 4 months and others that keep a darker color for more than a years before turning a reddish-orange color. I haven't seen any cockerels with eyes that were too light though so your line sounds like it is quite different from what I work with. Cockerel are usually culled between 5-8 months old so if you don't like the color by 8 months old, then you can probably accept that it might not ever settle the way you want it to.

when does eye color fully develop? i have a bcm cockerel that is about 5 1/2 months old. His eyes look lighter than the bay color desired. Hoping it'll darken.
How easy/hard is eye color to correct?
I used to worry about everything but now I don't as much. Things like eye color and feathered legs are easy to fix if paired with the right birds.

What are the hardest issues to deal with? White feathers? Those carrying wheaten?

Type????? Open tails, color, egg color..... white feathers maybe, not an issue I have had really. Wheaten.... just cull that issue.

Thank you! The more I observe/learn about the breed, the more I am satisfied with my pullets and the more issues I find with my cockerels.

Aloha! I am going to pick up two week old straight run marans tomorrow (a blue and black) and I was wondering if anyone has any tips on trying to pick out pullets as I probably won't be able to keep a roo :(

the bigger ones are usually male. and the combs are noticeably larger even when they are young.

Joining in!
I'm fairly new to the Marans breed. I have one FBCM hen and a my mature roo, Gordon, is a FBCM. He's beautiful. Quite a specimen. However he has some white Feathers in his tail : (
My FBCM hen, libby...she's a beauty and lays super dark eggs but she's as mean as hell. Bites me!
I have 5 FBCM chicks right now [3 pullets, 2 cockerels (I think, they're only 4.5 weeks old so no 100% positive)] so will replace my roo with the best looking cockerel. Libby however...I think I'll keep her for a while so I can get her dark egg genes in there....What we put up with for pretty eggs!!!
Anywho...hello there FBCM peeps!!

Hi when you say open tails, does this mean v shaped viewed from behind ?
Some of my marans have the v and I guess some are pinched.
:)
