Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Yes my chicks legs are feathered. It was definitely a marans egg that this chick hatched from so it would have had to be that my sfh roo got in with the marans which would not have been good for him with my marans roos disposition when it comes to other roos. A lady near me hatched out 20 or so of my eggs and had 2 of these chicks. Is there any way they are a splash?

I had some leghorn eggs appear in the nest box of my Marans pen. The leghorn was in the run NEXT to the Marans. I finally shut her up in the coop and still her **** egg kept appearing in the Marans nest box. Took me a bit , but I finally figured it out....there was a rat who would sneak eggs from the Leghorn pens, carry them over to the Marans, grab more eggs.....how did I figure it out? Well, the EE eggs began to appear in the Leghorn run and she was in the barn. So I moved the hens out of the Marans pen, put a glue trap down and caught a rat with the leghorn egg. I was going crazy trying to figure this out. Now I notice the ravens carry the eggs around as well....maybe you had some help like I did? I found the rat's nest, about 20 feet away from the run, under the dog igloo with lots of broken egg shells....for a while there I was sure one of my Marans was laying a white egg....I even isolated them but they laid dark eggs....(Whew)

That's quite a story! Who would have ever guessed a rat was behind all of that? LOL

Where did your BCM breeders come from? Do you have photos of the parent birds?

here are a few. I picked up a few new breeders a few weeks ago. Havent hatched any chicks out of them yet.

All right. I know build the barn first. What if your choice was between a well colored boy with a HUGE comb and a big tail and his hatchmate which is filling out in the chest more, has a slightly neater comb and a correct size tail but only has copper on the neck. This second boy also seems just a tad shorter and wider.

Most of my hens are already too dark, tho there is one with a fair amount of copper on her neck, she is mossy over the back. Most of the rest range from pure black to just a few copper feathers around the head

I am very much inclined to test mate the second boy, but what would you do?

I just got this Bev's line Black Copper Maran 2 weeks ago. I was told this is pullet, but she is very aggressive towards my other pullets and this morning I saw her jumped on my small Ameraucana? Can pullet hump too?

Cockerel or pullet?
