Black Copper Marans discussion thread

We have intended for a long time to hatch out some Marans as we want a back yard flock with lots of chocolate brown eggs and we've been toying with the idea of breeding them for other casual chicken keepers locally. Well, that time is finally here!

This batch of black and blue coppers has started to hatch and we are awaiting more as there is lots of pipping and peeping activity in the incubator. However something I noticed right away are the toes on this little one. Apparently shortened toes are something you see on Marans and you wouldn't use those birds to breed...however other pics of chicks on this thread look somewhat similar? So I'm posting a pic here to see what you think.

He or she hatched about 7 hours ago. I think his hatch mate has similar feet, but I'll have to re-check.

Thanks!

???? Where does the line between breeding and money make sense, i was trying to buy wade jeane line black copper marans for lets say $12 to $15 each and the wade jeane were breed with little peddler now the chicks are $100. Am i getting wade jeane or little peddler? ????
I wouldn't pay more than $10 for a CHICK. So much can happen to them before they become adults, that it's not worth spending the money. if they are crossing the two lines together it doesn't mean they are the best of the best. you might actually end up with really bad quality chicks.

That's a very short outside toe. I have seen something similar but not this extreme. Surely not a breeder, but if a pullet and she can walk all right, she could lay eggs to eat.

i would not worry about it ... if he is a rooster you will probably have more male chicks thus a good selection . If it is a hen i would wait to see the darkness of eggs . I'm thinking that this is not a disqualification with this breed and can be expected at various times . It's at the breeder;s discretion to use or not ( i would think it would simply be if he/she was needed).

The shorter toe is a toe mutation associated with leg feathering gene. It's called, "Brachydactyly mutation." Breed only chicks who do not have any missing toe nails, shortened toes, or double toes no matter how otherwise perfect they may be, as missing toes can be a sign of inbreeding (Missing toe nails is often one first sign.). However, as previous posters said, you can however, use hens for layers.

Here's a link that talks about physical chicken mutations:

Thanks everyone,

We ended up with what I think are two black and four blue coppers. The blues have slightly shortened third toes too, but not like this. Only the two blacks have them, so it was a problem with the breeder. I'm looking at getting chicks from a local within driving distance who looks to have some gorgeous birds (with normal toes) as I really would like to breed black coppers. My husband is more partial to the blues and birchens but not me, lol. It's a bit disappointing but the color on the eggs was really good. Hopefully they are both hens and will be good layers.
