Black Copper Marans discussion thread

No they are not molting. That is how they have always looked. They have never had a large tail.

Well that is not normal for a Marans. Perhaps they are pulling each other's feathers out. That happens a lot. I have 3 Rhode Island Red cockerels right now with no tails because the Ameraucanas that are in the same pen have pulled all their feathers.

We finally got confirmation from at least one of our girls that they are in Fact, Black copper marans, So I might join in on the discussion, if that's alrigh. :) Mom found an egg out in the pen yesterday, and It was VERY Dark!! . (I'm at college currently, so yeah.. Today I get to go home for the first time in a month and see our girls. excited!) Dale, our rooster. (His leg band is number 88, and he liked to run around the pen at Mach speeds when he was younger) Dale again. (he was just hatched this spring.) Taima, The young hen my dad took to the county fair this year. We have other birds, but I will get pics today or tomorrow when I get time at home. I'm excited to get into Marans. We have 6 hens and one Rooster, and the rest of the chickesn in the pen with them are our Easter Eggers. We also Have OEGBs, Japanese bantams and Mille Fleur d'uccles, plus the ducks lay eggs sometihmes better than the chickesn do! So many colors of eggs! :)
Hi Leah , Your Marans look great !! The dark eggs are a real bonus ... you have several beautiful varieties of poultry . I used to show Brown Red OE Game Bantams(about 15 yrs) ..... is it Wheatens you have in OE ? the ar so neat especially the females . Do you show your birds ? it's a lot of fun and work that i loved . I got my BC Marans direct from Bev Davis about 7 or 8 yrs back , got more 5-6 yrs bck , more at 4 yrs and gotten Bev's Blacks during this yr and last yr (had some bad luck with these but a new bigger trap got coon & possum and my 22 got the black wild cat , he was getting one a day for 3 weeks or more(caught him in the act) .... and this is not counting the ones the coons and possums got I've been into chickens over 60 yrs ..... now i only have my Marans , roller pigeons and American games ...... we do have our show dogs (Papillons) we are not able to show as often as in yrs past . i let my nephew have 5 of the oldest hens(about 7 yrs old) they were Healthy and still laying(due to what and how i feed) but at this age only around a 4 in darkness . I hope you are doing well in college (are you majoring in poultry science ?) . It is so good to see your enthusiasm and interest in poultry (i just love it even w/my disabilities that came with age and some unknown) . I will try to send you a PM tomorrow on some places of interest in Marans .
