Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Well to look at her she looks all dark black but when you look close you can see it!

I will let someone with more experience make suggestions for you. I only know what birds not to use

Speaking of that, I've been in contact with Brian Parks, and also Julie Akers in FL. Both have Davis line birds, and both are highly recommended. Brian is in Oregon, but I will be ordering chicks not eggs, so I'm not overly concerned about the shipping. Brian's are a little more expensive, though. I know sidewing got his birds from Julie, and he seems very happy with them. Does anyone else have any experience with her?
I was just looking at the pullets yesterday and noticing the nice copper coming in on the hackles. I will try to get some updated pics. They all look a little ragged from the winter cold and mud.

Aside from the obvious yellow feet, the straw hackles were what bothered me the most on my birds. The one in front was Tate as a juvenile, but you can see the color on the pullet behind him. The halo on the rooster was bad enough, but the pullets looked like sex-links. If your birds from Julie are getting a nice copper, I'm very glad to hear that

Speaking of that, this year I started bagging the lawn leaves and putting them in the pens. Now I have zero odor, the chickens are clean, and so are the eggs. I don't imagine you have many leaves where you are, but I was just throwing that out there for anyone that does. It's been a lifesaver for me during the wet fall and winter

Good idea ! I just raked the rest of ours ugh! Maybe I'll get more but trees are looking sad ! I'll keep this in mind for future use.

I hatched out a cockerel about 21 weeks ago he's big! He's been trying to do his thing with the ladies. Not having the bed of luck yet . He has the prettiest dance I have witnessed out of the 5 roosters I have had in the past. However , I noticed the other day when I squat down to do something he starts his dance. He's yet to jump on me . How do I stop him? I incubated him and held him all the time! He's always following me!. He comes when called . He loves when I hdold him. He's so sweet but I don't want this to become a issue. I have been flogged but not by him. It doesn't seem like he wants to hurt me . Any tips would be great I really like him!

It's really been great. I was afraid they may be slick when wet, but the water actually runs through the leaves and to the ground, and leaves a dry surface to walk on.
The chickens constantly turn the leaves, mulching it with the poop, and there is absolutely no odor. After it all breaks down, it's easy to scoop up with a pitchfork, so in the spring the old litter will go on the compost pile and I will start over

I could fit my fallen leafs for the whole season in a plastic shopping bag.

That is a great idea though.

Ok, I'm on Julie's list. If these birds aren't good, I'm blaming it all on you

Seriously, though, she said it could be as soon as 4 weeks, or as long as 24 weeks

I told her I'm not wishy washy, and will send the payment as soon as she invoices. Maybe that will keep me near the top of the list

I think if others don't pony up they slide down the list, but don't quote me on that. Good luck with them!
