Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Ok so hatch is over. I only got 3 out of my 10 set, but at least I got something. I Think I may have to get a new hygrometer... I almost had 4 hatch but 1 died durring zipping.

Good Luck mJennifer..............I find the whole process so exhilerating!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Karen I'm so glad you found some.

I put 18 in lockdown for a 26th hatch. Some are mine, some are from another source. I got a HUGE egg from one of my older girls today, so I stuck 10 more in the bator including that one. The kids were so in awe of that egg. LOL I love how big the eggs are from Bev's birds.

Come to think of it, I was in awe of that egg too. LOL

I got blue OEs from some of my birds my last hatch. The one with the blue AMs I told you about Sunday. They look so much like the AMs, but all have feathered shanks. So cute.

Morning Kim,
Glad to see you (read you?...LOL) here. I just checked out your BYC page. I never realized you have such a variety. BTW cute picture of Makayla & the $1000 chick on the other thread. My husband & I spent our first few years together in Alameda & had our daughter while there.
How cute that you can see who your OEs are. I think my OEs presented as BCMs, but even if they looked like EEs I had both in that hatch so can't tell. This hatching & keeping track of who's who has been a challenge for me but I think I have it figured out now. Now I have metal coated cages for them to hatch in so I know which is which & that is how I have kept the newest hatches separate. My Harry Shaffer Lav Ams & ChickieLady's Blue Ams hatched the same day but I had her's in cages. It worked perfectly & I banded all hers as soon as I took them out of the incubator.
I am doing some test hatches on BCMs right now just for my own information. I put one cage in with older eggs & 1 fresh collected one & another cage with all freshly colleded darkest eggs from within a week. I will be happy to get some better BCMs but for now I keep working with what I've got.
I take it that Sportsman has been getting the job done. I am glad you were able to fix it. I would be so unhappy if something happened to my incubator. I even drug out the old Styro & ordered a hygrometer for it that hasn't come yet but I have it full of Olivia's Black Austrlorps & the Blue Andalusians just to see what happens. What they heck that's how I had to do everything before the Brinsea & I loved doing it. I do have much better luck now though. I am hoping adding the hygrometer will help that.
Have a good day
Karen in Turlock
About OEs ,..........I lost track of mine & now won't know who's who until it lays if it's a pullet that is............LOL.

I have a quick question for you all. I just hatched out my first French Black Copper Marans chicks two weeks ago and had a pretty awesome hatch considering they were from shipped eggs. However, I've noticed that one of my chicks has hatched out brown. Is this normal? I'm thinking of selling this chick as I may plan on breeding these guys eventually when I have more time to research the breed and money to invest. What would be a fair asking price for this chick?

I'm attaching a photo, but it's not the best quality. I do have better photos, but there is something wrong with my computer and it will not let me upload any photos to it at the moment. The chick is obviously brown and does not have the white markings like the others do. It does have feathering on it's feet, but not as much as the others. I'm not sure if others have experienced this before...?

The other brownish chicks in the photo are my Blue/Buff cross Orpingtons. At first I was confusing this chick with the Orpingtons, but he definately as feathered feet. I purchased these hatching eggs from two different sellers too.

Any help is appreciated

I have one black copper maran.. that hatched.. March 2nd.. how to tell sex

another words.. it came out with a little crown.. LOL/ do the girls have them too.. or just boys.. another words.. I have nothing to compare one to another of BCM/ to see if the comb is larger or smaller then others.. since theirs no others..

Tell me, do the girls have combs too?? just not as large

Could people please share with me some photos of 3-4 week old Black copper marans... please.. please.. please.. and tell me what their gender ended up being..

I dont want to give it away next week... because I think its a boy and its really a girl.. LOL

What should I be looking for???

Well, as you all know, these chickens are very entertaining with their antics, AND their eggs! I love finding a new surprise every day. This odd egg is from a new layer, probably her third egg now. Paint jets are starting to gear up, but are still in the cold stage. To answer Lisa's one question of the egg colors; mine all started with a #4 color, then darken to about a #6. For the older three pullets that have been laying for the last 4 1/2 months, the egg color has remained the same, even now while they are molting. The egg on the left was laid by a 6 month pullet, the funny egg was laid by her sister who just started (slacker!

), and the one on the right was laid by one of the older pullets at 9 1/2 months of age. Hope this egg gets as dark as the spots, that would be awesome!!!

Oh..did I mention? It's a HUGE honking egg too!

Hello.. anyone... anyone who breeds BCM/s... anyone?????????????????????????????????????????

Why don't YOU post a pic of the chick in question? You might get a quicker response.

You can't always go by the comb alone. I have a nice pullet now, that when she hatched, I would've bet the farm was a roo! At 3-4 weeks, there should be other tell tale signs to go by, like feathers, leg thickness, stature, attitude, etc. If you look at my avatar, that is a 4 week old cockerel, who is now 6+ months old and huge! See how thick his legs are? See the color and size of his comb? See his "cocky" stance? All that says Rooooooooo!
