Black Copper Marans discussion thread

The most frequent mutation for rumpless is a dominant gene, the one found in Araucanas. If it were the same gene in these odd Marans, it would show up much more frequently. There are other genes for rumplessness besides the Araucana rumpless gene. It is probably not the Araucana rumpless, just a spontaneous mutation, not due to crossbreeding. Even the Araucana rumpless has issues related to it, such as the pasty bum mentioned, and inability to mate properly.

The marans have an asiatic bird background not the same as the aracauna. The worry about improper feathering is a valid concern as it relates to possible health risks when ignored or purposely bred into a flock. While it is interesting and even cute it opens a door to disease. The slow feathering (tail-lessness if you will) can mean the bird is susceptable to Leucosis. This disease can wipe out an entire flock very quickly. There is no good purpose to keeping poor youngstock that can be possible vectors for disease. Birds that get proper plumage quickly will have an earlier laying age than the poor feathering birds.

Here is a pic of my only rumpless girl when she was younger. My dh is attatched to her and named her Guinea Girl lol. I looked her over real good and she does not have an actual tail (where the feathers grow out from). She used to lay about a #4 egg but now that she has matured to a little over a year old, it is more like a #5 large speckled egg. She is a sweetie. I have her in with the regular egg layers and a little phx rooster for thier protector. He has no problems mating her.
I don't hatch any of her eggs but they look fertile when cracked open. I don't know if it is genetic or not but know some people who have gotten rumpless from the same breeder I did.
ETA pic duh lol !

So she is truly rumpless too? Interesting.

I have a girl I culled to my layer pen. Since she was a chick she always carried her tail down like a quail and now that she's older it looks like her tail has vanished although it is just tucked tightly away. DH is also attached to her

Yes she is truly rumpless. No tail and no tail feathering. Its wierd but most of the rumpless marans I've seen photos posted on are male. I haven't seen any female rumpless marans posted except her so far. So I wonder if it is more common in males?

it is found in females as well.... I still stand on my cull stance... When I found out what LL was and what it meant to my flock it was an easy choicet... It also said to produce birds with stunted growth...not the same as Dwarf gene.... It is a sticky wicked.... Each person does what works for them just know the risks...
