It looked all girly to me . . . . I didn't think there would be a doubt. .. . .
It that is a cockerel, it is seriously lacking in the wattle / comb department !

how much color this boy has going on. THE COMB I like, but it does not have much of a blade. . .
All my hens and roos have the blade from you know where. . . . I like the looks of this guys comb.

Does the standard indicate how much of a blade should be on the combs ? ? ?

DON - - what on the comb indicates Davis blood to you? Wynette and I both have this thing for Davis blood.. .. but like I said above . .. my combs are homely and well Wynette's is BEAUTIFUL to my eyes.

EDIT:
I am now caught up on all the reading and thanks to Kathy's and Wynette's earlier discussion on combs.. . I do see that although my eye may prefer Wynette's roo's comb, the standard states that a longer blade should be there. . .

I still like Wynette's roo's combs better than mine. I think my guys' blades are too long and up too high.

The SOP says:
Shanks -- medium length, stout, and straight; lightly feathered down the outer sides.
Toes -- four long and well-separated toes on each foot. Outer toes lightly feathered, middle toes free from feathers.

I was in error when I said "sparsely feathered." However, I do consider sparse to be "lightly feathered."

Since the fish meal is sooooo high in protein and you are looking for protein levels much lower. ... .
It might be better if we start with a 50 lb bag of layer ration and add a small amount of fish meal to boost it up to the desired 20 or 25 % levels.

Add about 4.5 lbs of fish meal to a 50 lb bag of layer ration to get 20%
Add about 11.25 lbs of fish meal to a 50 lb bag of layer ration to get 25 %

Here is a picture of one of my 11 week old cockerels for comparsion . .. OH and he went to freezer camp WAY to much copper!
I've hatched 15 - 20 BCM cockerels this year and this was the only one to copper on the chest like this. . . . .
He was a hateful cuss too. We named him SOUP POT early on!

Lisa, the comment about the BC males comb looking like they have Davis blood is because the Davis line is noted for have large Combs. The SOP only says the blade should not lay on the neck. If I remember right the Langshan comb would be a good example of what we should be looking for on the Marans.

Kathy, someone brought up the Sparse feathering a few weeks ago and never checked it out to verify. By using Sparse you could have 2-3 small feathers and the bird would be acceptable. Just trying to close up holes in the standard.
