Oh Gosh .... I am not sure I should even ATTEMPT to answer this, as I am a novice myself, but you mentioned adding the black oil sunflower seeds 'to their 'food' .... what 'food' are you giving to them ? As I understand it, if kitchen scraps and other sundry bits and pieces are being given, with no hint of proper chicken pellets ( at whatever stage - grower, finisher, or layer pellets ) being given, then it could be some stagnant stuff they have picked up from scraps, or a wild animal or bird has contaminated the scraps by eating them 'while the chickens backs are turned'. We have a flock of crows that have decided that 'hey - here's a go - good tucker in the chicken run' ... but my older hens take care of them and frighten them off. Crows can contaminate food, so I have read on line and been told by my Vet. Other birds no doubt can do the same, not to mention squirrels / possums.

Purchase a good brand ( Barastoc or whatever ) of appropriate age chicken pellets, and keep to that. They have a decontaminate and anti-biotic in them that helps prevent coccidiosis.. Having chickens for the first time myself, I have done a HEAP of research, and asked questions of everyone I have come across who have ever kept chickens. Stacks of information - probably too much !!! Moderation - good clean cold water, good commercial chicken pellets at appropriate age stage, and not a lot more than that. Lay off giving them treats for a while and see what happens. They will get all they need from good quality commercial ( Barastoc in Australia ) chicken feed.

I do hope this helps a bit ... I would be very distraught if my chickens were dying, and I understand your dilemma.

In a nutshell - go back to basics - and I sincerely hope you have no more problems.

Good luck

Anniebee.

I should add that the chick that died wouldn't eat or drink. She would stay standing with her eyes closed. She wouldn't respond to touch or noise.
SHe looked like she was in pain, poor thing.
My hen was doing the same thing since 5/20/19 last night found her laying in the coop not able to stand or walk, thought she was egg bound.Today 5/22/19 Took her to the farm vet, she asked what fed my hen told her Purina Layina, scratch grains & she at black oil sunflower seeds
The vet said she was suffering from a Vitamin B deficiency caused by the Black oil sunflower seeds
