black sex-link

I'm pretty sure that the only way that is NOT a pullet is if somehow a bird of another breed (that has the same appearance as chicks) got mixed in with the batch.

As another poster said, the roos are totally different color.

That looks alot like my golden comet... but I'm not sure either - I don't have recent pictures of mine because my camera went to the great Photomart in the sky. Maybe I'll try with my phone.

That is what my RIR's look like. They have a bit of black on the tips of the wing and tail feathers. They were reddish yellow as day olds. Almost a rust color.

I have 2 10-day-old Black Sex Link girls (hopefully!) Mine are VERY black, black footed - with pink middle toes - and spend most of the time eating. Surprisingly, they aren't the biggest chicks. And by the way, could someone come up with a better name?

they are also called black star, but not many call them that.

I know nothing, but in another thread I was reading it said RIR from hatcheries are lighter and TRUE RIR from breeders are very very dark, almost black...maybe a pro can pipe in and confirm or deny for ya

How does one tell those from Barred Rocks??? Or are they the same thing?

Barred Rocks are a color variety of Plymouth Rock (a pure breed) where the black sex-links are a cross between the Barred Rock and the Rhode Island Red.

I think all Barred Rocks have the white spot on their head as a chick, both hens and roos. It's only when they're crossed with a RHR that the female chicks don't have the white head spot.
