My blacks are finally starting to lay again. Temps are lucky to get in the 30's now. I don't even want to get a pic of my blacks right now. I have a cockerel that is super rough and quite a few of his girls are almost bald. I also have a feather picker in with the other ones and they are all missing beards now. Have an egg eater in one pen too. I caught her as I was collecting the other day. Grabbed an egg from out under a broody and she rushed over to put a hole in it before I got it in the carton.

On a sidenote...doctor put me on 'bedrest' since she thinks I'll probably go into labor in the next day or so. Partially dilated and head is engaged in the birth canal. Pfft like I can sit still for long. Went into work and cleared up all paperwork for the LOA & short term disability last night. Helped with chores out at the barn last night and redecorated my indoor aviary. Sighhh...at the point I just want it over with so I can get back to life.

Just started to read the thread.

I am not sure if it was mentioned yet, as I didnt read the whole thread. But the ingrediant in the black as knight that help with fading is the paprika. Most of my friends with black horses just feed paprika as its cheaper than the black as knight supplement, and it works great for them. Luckily my horse is a grey so I dont have to worry about sun bleaching.

But would paprika be safe to feed to chickens?

Amy- the cock you see the backside of in the first photo is the black mihalik cock I have on loan from Calesta. I just LOVE him. I am really glad I had him this fall as she had a coon raid her pens and lost a bunch of birds. So sad.

My best cockerel from you has developed gold in his hackle, the backup has just a smidge of gold, not very noticeable. Nice backsides on them. I'm just going to switch the two out over the breeding season and see what I get. I didn't hold back any boys from the calesta crosses.

You know, I think those porcelain from you are throwing partridge looking chicks that are feathering out to a very pale blue partridge looking color (so far) under a lav cock? I really wonder what the background is. I know they were recessives from your splash, you thought might be related to porto's crosses to lavender, right? I'm curious to see second generation. Once I get a couple decent pullets I will probably pass the originals from you along and do a father-daughter cross back to the lav dad.

The blacks- still my favorite. Had two large breeding pens, now down to one as I'm conditioning for show.

One of my girls from my assorted color pen began laying today the only roo in there is black.

Those porcelain looking buggers are so wierd. They were 2/3rd generation birds from Bobbi. I was getting lav's, switched cockerels last year and got those off colored ones. I bought some nice splash/blue youngsters from Sunshine Silkies last fall and will probably phase out those old splash of mine too. Just for the heck of it I threw a few of those eggs in the incubator out of the 2 off color gals I let my mom keep. They were in with my buff cockerel. Luckily only 1 hatched and it it butt ugly..... shades of blue, buff, brown and just a hint of patterning on the wings so far.

Both of the girls look like this: Something going on with a pattern gene in there somewhere too.

Now on the other hand I've been using those 4 black pullets I showed last fall with my splash cockerel. I've been getting a few outstanding young blues.... Maybe outcrossing to a different line will eventually get rid of those gold hackles too. I know it will definitely help with comb size and wings.
