Black silkies

They definitely get a bath. Any old shampoo I have on hand followed up by a vinegar rinse. Trim beaks and toenails. A few more drops of Frontline so they don't pick up any bugs from other birds. Couple drops of VetRX on the comb to shine that up. Spritz of horse ShowSheen on the butts and feet to keep poop from sticking. Then I take a comb through them to get out feather casings on crest and hackles. Quick blow dry to get any of those leftover feather casings off them. Always have lots of wet wipes and extra towels on hand the day of the show for last minute clean ups.

I'm going to breed black silkies soon and I was just wondering if its true that they are not as likely to go broody as other silkies?

Okay, sorry. In my experience, if it has Silkie in it, its very likely that it'll go broody. I have blues, blacks and splash, and every single one of my hens sits AT LEAST once a year. Some of them spend their entire spring and summer hatching and raising chicks and I have one sitting on eggs right now, even though we've already had snow!

I'm new to BYC and looking for a super tame black silkie roo about 1yo. We just lost ours and I miss his eyes and ears! He was a cuddler and we must have another one that loves to be loved. We are in the Portland, Oregon area. Not doing any hatching so does not need to be perfect just really friendly.

Hi everyone, I am new to silkies and just got two black silkies a hen with one of her hatchlings.

I am considering keeping a separate pen for black silkies to keep the colour pure. I am currently looking for more black silkies but they are hard to find here.

I'm sure this is posted; I'm probably just missing it, but what's the difference between black, & dark blue? & how do you know if they're split?
Here's my Silkie, Nuggs. He's the smallest of my hatch and the sweetest, most docile little guy. I think he's a boy. He has a little comb, but the rest of him looks pretty feminine, so idk. His hatch mate Slimy Bob is HUGE, and crowing, so maybe Nuggs is intimidated. Lol

Well, black is black and blue is blue
Sometimes they can be very difficult to tell apart. If you part the feathers and notice they look more grey (blue) next to the skin, that would be blue. Black feathers will be all black. That method doesn't always work though. In that case, the only way to be sure is to breed. I like to breed my suspected dark blues to splash. If they are, in fact, blue, the resulting chicks will be blue and splash. If the suspect is black, the resulting chicks will all be blue. You can use a blue for the test breeding as well. Blue x splash= blue, black and splash babies. Blue x black= blue and black babies.
