Merry (early) Christmas.
We're new here to the forum and relatively new to owning chickens as well. For the past 9 months we've had almost no problems at all but recently we've noticed a few spots on some of the girl's combs. We've already poked around in the forums and see we're hardly the first to have questions/concerns about mystery blemishes, however, haven't found any examples in those other threads that look quite the same as what we're seeing. Our first thoughts are some kind of pox but the local university extension told us mites and or lice are more likely but they won't be available to see the pictures until after the holidays. In the meantime, we're hoping someone has dealt with something similar and hopefully worked out a definitive diagnosis.
Quick note: we did lose a single girl a few weeks back but her comb was clear and she had not other physical signs of trauma our disease. We knew she wasn't feeling well for a couple days prior because she was lethargic, didn't want to eat much and noticeably kept to herself. All the other birds seemed completely normal so we assumed a one-off.
Including pics from two of the girls who currently seem the most affected though more than half of the girls still look completely clear. and the rest have blemishes so minor they could easily just be normal pecking damage.
Thanks to everyone in advance.
