Um.... Hey Wisconsin! .... um, yeah... This is Iowa ..... Hey, remember last year when you sent us a chia pet for Christmas? Well, your 2009 present is on it's way... It just left here about 3 hours ago, and moving quickly toward you with 50 mph winds following. Really, you can thank us later....

PLEASE keep that stuff up your way! Crazy people in/around Atlanta don't know how to drive in that stuff and it causes MASS CHAOS for days. We actually had thunderstorms and tornado watches here last night and about 6" MORE of rain.....auughhh

Just the "chance of snow" here and the grocery store is out of:
Milk
Bread
Eggs, and of course...
BEER

People act like we'll be shut in for weeks....

We had a true blizzard here back in the 90's (I had 17" at my house in north metro Atlanta) and we didn't go anywhere for a week!

A little every now and then is nice, but when we have no road crews experienced in snow removal....it don't work so well.

Things are falling apart here!!

I lost a hen last night, and almost lost a rooster. His feet were frozen, and so were his legs. We sat under the heat lamp for about an hour and I messaged his legs and feet. He is fine now. Thank God.

We lost a guinea, and I literally mean lost. He must have died overnight and gotten buried in the snow.

One other one was frozen, but hes thawing and going to make it. The other 3 I DUG out this morning, because the snow was completely covering their house, to where I couldnt see it. They are all inside warming up with the Frozen one.


ON THE BRIGHT SIDE. I hatched out 8 Coturnix Quail last night, and there are 2 Chicken Chicks that hatched this morning and 2 more pipped. I guess death does bring new life.

Im not sure, but my fingers about fell off last night. I was scrambling at the beginning of the worst part last night (about 9:30), trying to catch my bobwhites before they got covered up. Im glad I did because their 3' 6" tall cage was amost completely full today. Dodged a bullet there...

My Silver pheasants didnt enjoy last night very much, but they are okay, huddling in their little house.

I moved alot of birds around last night, and got my number of outdoor pens from 7 down to 3.

My horse isn't too happy this morning, when my hubby comes home for lunch we're going to go check her out - I might put something oily under her hooves to try stop the ice and snow building up. Poor girl! (she really needs to be back in California)

... RAPIDLY FALLING TEMPERATURES RESULTING IN SLICK SPOTS ON AREA ROADWAYS...

MUCH COLDER AIR HAS BEEN SPREADING ACROSS CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST ILLINOIS THIS MORNING. AREAS WEST OF I-39 AND HIGHWAY 51 WERE BELOW FREEZING... AND EASTERN ILLINOIS WILL FALL BELOW FREEZING OVER THE NEXT COUPLE HOURS.

DUE TO THIS RAPID COOLDOWN... WET ROADWAYS FROM THE RAINFALL YESTERDAY AND OVERNIGHT HAVE BEGUN TO FREEZE. THIS HAS CAUSED NUMEROUS ACCIDENTS. WINDS GUSTING AS HIGH AS 50 MPH ARE ALSO CAUSING PROBLEMS WITH KEEPING VEHICLES UNDER CONTROL.

IF YOU ARE TRAVELING ACROSS THE AREA THIS MORNING... SLOW DOWN AND ALLOW PLENTY OF EXTRA TIME TO REACH YOUR DESTINATION.

I'm going home early this afternoon--the birds are DEFINITELY going into a stall in the barn tonight. Fortunately, their "digs" are keeping them out of the wind and there are no puddles in their run. Not much more than a dusting of snow. Not as bad as 1836, when there was heavy rain in Central Illinois, coupled with a 40 degree drop in temperature. People and animals froze to death.

Well, we got dumped on and it is still snowing. I put a couple of bales of straw in the coop yesterday, acts as a bit of a windbreak near the pop door. Covered some of the outdoor run wirh plastic sheeting over the hardware cloth so snow will not get in. Filled feeders and waterers, big heated waterer is working well. I was not sure if I could get to the coop today so I tried to be ready for the worst. Well, this morning I spent almost an hour shoveling a path clear from the backdoor to the coop and clear an area in front of the run door and the coopdoor. Also had to get some snow off the covered run, there was about a foot of snow on it already. Once I made it in the coop I opened the popdoor for the chicks and gave them some treats, picked up eggs and turned a light on for the day.I doubt they will go in the run. Everybody is fine, the coop stayed just about 32-33 degrees overnight. In a little while I will close the pop door as the wind is supposed to pick up and the temp will drop. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will not get too bad. Was called off today due to weather. I already shoveled the driveway though, was not sure if we were open or closed today.....

Our horses are all doing good. I scared them this morning, when I was running around the guinea pen. (The corral has a good view of the pen)
