I found a thread with the same problem but I didn't see any reasoning for it?

My question is: what causes this?
I just got this from the nesting box and am a little concerned. I won't be able to check vents until after sunset (this group is much more timid than my others).
What should my next steps be, if any? I did see discussion about feeding eggs and different oils in the other thread, would that be useful?

Update: I found the hen and she is not looking good. She definitely has flystrike.
Okay, post pictures. :(

I would soak her in water. I soak my birds with flystrike for 20-30 minutes. This gets rid of most of the maggots. I then, pick out anymore that I see. Please keep me posted.

Man, she looks so so bad..😔 I can't start treatment until tonight, my grandmother is in the hospital and I was just about to leave when I saw the hen.
She looks like she may also have a prolapsed vent. I tried to snap some quick pictures, the lighting wasn't good.

I know time is of the essence but I need to see my grandma, I feel torn. & so guilty having to leave her like this

Your grandma is more important. Come back and prepare yourself. She is a tough case...

Unfortunately I think it's both :( If you look at the right where her tail feathers are coming out of the skin, you can see the maggots. I can't imagine that was related to the prolapse, since they're so far up? It's so bad. :(

Poor girl even laid an egg....:(
