I noticed now and then we get eggs with blood on the them. Sometimes it's smeared in the nests. Is it internal or just from laying the egg itself? Please help!

If they are relatively new to egg laying this can happen occasionally, but it also can happen from a hen being over weight or poor hygiene.

I have very occasionally gotten some small blood smears. If they are new to egg laying or it is a particularly large egg, this shouldn't be something to worry about.
If it happens frequently it could be a problem though, so keep an eye on it.
How frequently would you say you find eggs with blood on them, and is it always one hen? Or do they all sometimes have the problem?

We have big hens, and huge eggs. There's about 2 or 3 of these a week. I think it's a variety of them that lay bloody eggs.

It's probably the egg size and hen size. We clean the feeders and bedding, and they've been laying for almost a year.

Thanks for the information! Now I know it's really nothing to worry about. :)

Could you tell me why the change in day length could cause blood on eggs? I found one this morning with a smear of blood, and just in the last couple of weeks it's getting dark earlier here with fall coming on. Thank you! :)

To be honest I don't know. I had a question about eggs, so I emailed a lady I knew. She emailed me a chart of the top twenty most common egg problems. That's what It said. I'd send the chart, but I'm not the greatest with technology. Actually, I'm extremely curious. Sorry about that.

Not sure if this helps since I just referred to this in my post...but, our Americuana just laid her very first egg. She's the smallest in the bunch and it wasn't a large egg by any means. But hers had blood smears on it too. Since you posted the same question, I'm going to assume it just happens. I would imagine hygiene wouldn't be a big issue with the people here on BYC. I think most of us love and cherish our pet chickens so we probably keep them pretty healthy with what we can control. That's why we all found this site!!!! Hope your chicks are well!!!!
