My mom cracked one of my hens' eggs today before I woke up and told me it was very bloody. It had alot of red in it. I didn't get a chance to look at it b/c she gave it to Spencer, my dog. (he loved it).

I check my hens several times a day. I can't figure out how this happened. I've never seen a bloody egg in the 4 years I've been keeping hens. My only conclusion was that maybe the egg rolled up against the front of the nesting box and I overlooked it. The hens just kept taking turns incubating it.

Has anyone had similar experiences with an egg that is fairly well developed?

Sometimes as an egg moves through the oviduct before the shell is deposited a blood vessel will break. This may cause just a small spot, or there can be a larger amount of blood in the egg. It may not happen again. If it does, you may want to try and identify the bird, as some can develop infections or irregularities in the oviduct that can affect normal egg laying.
