bloody navel newly hatched

I also am no expert and am just sharing with you what I've learned in the last couple of years. Try the egg cartons first so you don't have complications from temp/humidity drops. I'm really surprised no one else has chimed in on this thread, lol. I've never hatched ducks so I wouldn't be much help there. Hands off after day 18 is the best approach, I agree, but sometimes that can't be helped.

I will give it a try the next hatching see how it goes I will have to google it again and get the specifics about it but I got a few weeks for that. I am onto my next problem, lol. Something is up with one of my polish hens tonight. Went out to round them all up for bed and seen one of them was wobbly and had to use her wings to balance so trying to diagnose this now. I gave her an epsom salt bath and have her in a tub in the house in a dark room right now. Problem is her belly does not feel egg bound she actually looks and feels bloated. So that is what I am working on tonight. One of her sisters died a few months ago I am thinking it might be the same thing and something genetic. Anyway one thing or another.

Look up ascites. There are articles on this site about this. There are many illnesses that cause water-belly, some can be treated with antibiotics and some just lead to long term suffering. I wish I could be more help but I do not have enough experience to give solid advice about this yet.

Appreciate the info but it is not that. She does not have any of those symptoms or signs. She has all signs of being egg bound all of them I just dont feel an egg. Unfortunately we are the type that believe in doing everything possible so I am taking her to the vet today to make sure. I know alot of people will just let nature take its coarse or something more drastic just because it is a chicken. My wife and I believe all these animals are GODS creatures and we took on the responsibility so we have to do what we can on our part. It just gets expensive after awhile if have a lot of issues and over 30 chickens let alone all the ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats. This is the 4th chicken I have to take to my vet in the last yr. Fingers crossed this one has a better outcome. She is a buff laced polish and just a great chicken very calm and friendly but have had a couple of her siblings die of genetic issues. I am starting to get concerned that when I got this flock they may have been interbred to much. If that is even an issue with chickens. Anyway have to get ready have to go clean out the carrier for her. I also just noticed you are in TN so we are neighbors we are next door in SC.

I hope everything went well. :fl

sorry been a busy week and not really been online. Drain field for septic was saturated and had to dig a new drain field and that took me all week. Unfortunately we lost our polish girl. She was not egg bound. Took her to the vet for them to double check if she was egg bound but she ended up passing away while was at the vet. The vet said they believe she had an infection of some type because her temp was high and she also had sour crop. So that really sucked as our polish girls are really awesome. I got some new polish eggs from 4 different variations of polish from someone down the road that does show chickens and she gave me about a dozen half eggs to incubate. So I have them in the incubator now waiting to see what they do fingers crossed they are fertile and do good. I think I am going to try the egg carton come day 18 right now reading up if lay them in the carton versus standing up. Have you ever tried hatching in the egg carton on day 18 instead of laying them down. Think I will start using email to you and get off this post since we are so far from the topic that started. That chick is doing great no issues since I originally made the post so that is good.
