bloody poop - 4 1/2 week old chicks- Cocci update

We were gone most of the day today, and when i came home and checked on my chicks, they were ALL looking a lot better - more energetic and active, after just one day on Corid.

And i didn't see anymore bloody poop in the coop.

Is that normal for the Corid to act so quickly?

I'm so relieved and excited!

I'm glad everything turned out okay! I lost 4 of 25 of my chicks last year from cocci. I offered help too late to save those 4 poor babies.

Here's some advice for after-care that I had to learn through experience: Keep a watch on them though because cocci wears away the interior of their intestines and makes it smooth (intestines have bumby/feeler-looking things that absorb nutrients) - that's why they have runny, bloody poo. When they get better, feed them a healthy varied diet packed with protien to get their systems up and running good again. If their intestines were damaged too much and they don't get a good diet, it will be easy for them to be reinfected even when they get older (they get more and more immune the older they get).

Great job with them! Sounds like you got it covered! I really don't think you have to worry about damaged intestines though because I don't think the cocci got bad enough to cause major problems. They'll reallly look bad if the cocci is extensive. Good luck with your babies =^_^=

I had cocci start in my batch of chicks, and couldn't find Corid or Sulmet anywhere here. I DID find that Sulfa-Nox (in the horse section) is the same med as Sulmet, and it has dosing instructions on the back for poultry.

I found it to perk them up in one day, as well! They have been fantastic since. Sulfa-Nox only asks a 3 day dosage, and I'm happy to say everyone's great.

I lost a favorite hen last month to roundworms. We had treated her for cocci back in January. After she died due to the worms, I found out that cocci & roundworms often happen at the same time. The carriers are the same (earthworms, earwigs, & other dirt-dwelling bugs). It'd probably be a good idea to check for roundworms & treat if you find evidence of them. I never, ever want to see a hen to sick again. It was heart-breaking.

I've never fed them anything except chick starter. Do you think i should supplement yogurt or something after the fifth day of Corid?

I guess i'm too practical, and i haven't given them any treats, partly because i'm scared to give them the wrong thing and partly because i don't want to spoil them (yet). I haven't earned an instinct yet, so i'm going by the book. Not sure what might be the best thing to help them be strong and get their intestines really right.

Will i be able to see roundworms in the poop?

Pretty likely, though you'll need a stick, fresh specimens, and a close look. You'll see wriggly white things in the poop. They dry up very quickly so you won't see them in poop that's been sitting around for very long.​

I would give them yogurt. Make sure it has the live yeast cultures in it. Corid rids the body of bad and good bacteria and the yogurt will allow the good bacteria to grow. Glad to hear your chicks are doing good.

I agree with the yogurt. I also give my chickens wheat bread every now and then and sometimes I even scramble them an egg. They get leftover potatoes and beans as well. Basically anything I don't eat, they get. It is a quick way to spoil them, trust me.

Hi I have 6 chicks and I am a newbie. They are now 4 weeks, no problems so far. However today 2 of them look sleepy/lethargic. One is very sleep/lethargic and I am very alarmed. this Hen is usually very crazy and active and hard to catch. I could barely wake her up while holding her even but her on her back to check her vent. usually she flaps her wings and screeches but she did nothing. Silence, eyes closed. She is breathing normally and she stands if I put her down but doesn't move and keeps acting sleep. What should I do?? Is this cocci or something else? What else? There are so many thing I don't know where to start?
Help!??

If this problem I described with lethargic chicks is cocci, where do I get corid? I searched all over the net and couldn't find anywhere to buy it. Please send me a link if you have it.
