Bloody poop

The scratch may be irritating the lining of his intestines, thus the blood. Coccidia will irritate the intestinal lining with their activity, creating inflammation that can then harbor bacteria. I suggest knocking off the scratch during treatment.

I had my coccidiosis flareup a week after installing new sand in my run. My guess is the gravel yard where I buy it is now getting it from a new source. I plan on asking them.
Oh wow! I never would have thought of it being that. I get it bagged from Lowes. It’s multi-purpose sand.

Sand from Lowes may be sterilized play sand so the issue wouldn't be coccidia contamination. However, if the silica content is high, which is why play sand is not recommended for use with chickens, it may be caustic to the intestines, as well as the respiratory tract, and it could cause the bleeding when it's ingested. See if you can find out the silica content of your sand by doing a Google search on the brand.

It’s a multi-purpose construction sand. Not the clean white play sand. It’s what I’ve always use.

That wouldn't be a source of the intestinal inflammation. It can still be coccidiosis, though. The source of the coccidia may not be known, but they can still infect chickens in a number of ways, so you can't rule it out. I would treat with a coccidiostat to be safe.

Started the flock on CORID in their drinking water today. I’ll monitor for the next few days to see if it helps.
