Well, had it not worked, I would have moved to something else, quickly. The medicated starter also kept any additional chicks from contracting the disease, or worsening to the point of bloody feces. They were definitely exposed.
It's a good idea to kept medications on hand. I have a cabinet full of just about anything I could need. Nothing will substitute, however, for good husbandry and biosecurity. Also, no matter how much you might love a bird, it's not worth putting your flock at risk if one develops something serious.
