Bloody Stool Please Help!

The only bird I'm really worried about is the first one I found she was pooping straight blood. The other two is poop and blood mixed. I ordered some of the Albon can I use it as a preventative measure or is the corid better. And how often do I need to give them it as a prevention? Thank u for all of y'all's help!

The Sulfadimethoxine powder I use is made by Durvet. Albon may require a different dosage. I'm not familiar with Albon, but know it comes in tabs and a liquid suspension. Di-Methox is a powder too. I know you're concerned but stick with the Corid and keep track of what the stools look like for a few more days. I take chances I don't always expect others to. Sulfa drugs need to be used with caution when intestinal bleeding occurs. If you see no progress in the next two days with Corid, you could do a light dose of Sulfadimethoxine powder(1/4 tsp per gallon of water) for 3 days. You want to go easy on the treatment since damaged intestines can become quite painful to a bird. You must follow up with Probios and vitamins electrolytes for a good 3 days after. The nervous nellies will claim it is 1/8 tsp per 1 1/4 gallon of water for 5 days. That is too long of a treatment with this particular drug, and won't be as effective for treatment in your case with such small doses. What they are suggesting is a preventative.

Hey mike would some probios hurt to give them with the corid? I don't Believe I am going to loss any they are all eating and drinking so I guess that is a good sign. How often should I do some prevention when this is over with.

Don't mix supplements and medications. Since I don't use medicated feed, I start using the preventative dose of Corid 9.6% at 1 teaspoon per gallon of water for 5 days at around 3 weeks since they go from the brooder to the grow off pen at around 5 weeks. I do this every 3 weeks for 5 days up until they are 6 months old, and thereafter with a treatment of symptom dose (2 tsp) if I see symptoms of Coccidiosis. I follow up after each treatment with Avian Super Pack at 1/4 teaspoon per gallon plus 1 teaspoon of Probios Dispersible Powder. Vitamins-Electrolytes "Plus" is a vitamin powder which has the probiotics already added to the mix. There are many different kinds out there. GQF makes a "plus" powder also. For vitamin quality and content, I prefer the Avian Super Pack and Probios.

My methods of treatment may seem too much, or too little to some on here who may not live in the same climate and environment as I do with numerous wild quail, crows, finches, vultures, etc. It was often customary to use a preventative dose of 1 teaspoon of Corid powder for Cocci at 1tsp. per gallon up until 7-9 months of age. There is no withdrawal time for eggs, so treating for that long is not excessive. If you were to treat one group of chicks and not the other, you would see the difference. Only once did I have Coccidiosis problem where Corid wouldn't stop the symptoms. Sulfadimethoxine did in just 3 days of treatment. If you used it on laying hens (which isn't recommended since no withdrawal time has been established that I know of), I would wait a month before eating eggs.

Keep me posted on how the chicks are doing.

You're welcome, Rodney. So here you are about 3 days into Corid treatment and symptoms are less. That's a good sign and you can continue until you have completed it at 5-7 days. So, if you are using the "treatment" dose of liquid (2 tsp) or powder (1 tsp) per gallon of water, you will use the "preventative" dose liquid (1tsp) or powder (1/2 tsp) per gallon of water 3 weeks from your last day of treatment. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. Happy Memorial Day.
