To dry my chickens after baths, I:
1. Put some folded paper towels below the chicken's vent area to catch any poop. Wrap the chicken snugly in a towel with its legs tucked under its body with only its head protruding, so it can't get up and walk around. Place the chicken on the floor with a space heater blowing on it.
2. Bathe the next chicken.
3. Unwrap the first chicken from the first towel and "repackage" it in a fresh, dry towel and put it back in front of the heater.
4. Package the second chicken in the drier end of the first towel.
5. Bathe the third chicken.
6. Repackage the first chicken in a new dry towel, the second chicken in the drier end of the second towel, and the third chicken in either the original end of the first towel or in a new dry towel.
7. Bathe another chicken.
8. Place the first chicken in a wire cage or pet carrier in front of the heater, and shift the other chickens in the sequence of towels. After each chicken gets enough "towel-time", it can be added to the cage for the final dry cycle.
It is so cute to have this line of swaddled chickens, and then some loafing in front of the heater in the cage!
9. This generally dries a chicken in under an hour without too much hands-on work. If chickens need a little extra attention in a few spots, I'll use a hand-held hair blowdryer on them. Also, sometimes I put them in a small pen with a heat lamp afterward if they are still a bit damp and I think they might get chilled.
*Note: I learned about this sequential-towel drying method somewhere else on the net but cant find the reference anywhere now to give credit!
