Blue Ameraucana thread!

Pics
ummmmm................ok, but that looks nothing like my blues
I ordered from Meyer Hatchery ....

"These are not to be confused with Easter Eggers, as they are a pure breed. As with other "blue" breeds, the trait does not breed true. In addition to blue you may receive splash/black. Chick color is hatchery choice."

The picture of the chicks in the catalog look like the one I received, the picture of the hen looks like yours??? I don't know, I hope she is blue or splash, but I really am looking for the bright blue eggs. I'll be really disappointed if I spent $20 on one chick and didn't get what I ordered!! I also ordered 3 BLR Wyandottes in the hopes one will have a really nice coloring, of course with my luck two of the three died in the first 48 hours and the third looks black laced!! Gah!!

well it is true that blues don't breed true. Somewhere I have a chart that shows what the percentages are. To get true "Blue" they breed a black and a splash, that much I remember from the breeder I bought mine from.

I'd be concerned about the legs and feet. Those feet don't look anything 'ameraucana' to me. BUT I will be the first to say I don't know near as much as a lot around here do

found it..............

so according to this, if they breed two blues, there's a 50% chance the chicks will be blue, or 25% spash or black. If that's even ameraucana at all, it's almost got to be a splash

My two week old Blue Ameraucana

This gal looks like a dark blue or black. Not to worry, her legs should turn slate. The white belly will disappear as she feathers in. Meyer does sell true Ameraucanas. I have no idea as to their quality, but she looks normal to me! Blue and black Ameraucanas can have a lot or a little yellow down as chicks. You could get a black, blue, or splash chick if you've ordered a Blue Am. She's not splash.

For reassurance, here's one of my pure black Ameraucana chicks (sorry about the arrow). Lots of yellow fluff. She's a year old now and a beautiful little shiny black girl with very nice dark legs. I have eggs incubating from her right now

So don't worry! You have a cute chick!

well ok then. See I told you there are people who know more than me, LOL

All I do know for absolute certain, is that looks NOTHING like my blues did/do, nor any of the other that the breeder had on site when I picked mine up.

He does ship, and said he'll be hatching well into the summer. If you'd like his info let me know.

and for the record, I only paid $8 for mine, of course I picked them up since he's not quite an hour from me, so there was no shipping charges added.

Thanks for the BBS chart! It's a great reference. And definitely leg colour is something to be concerned with when looking at Ameraucanas. Is it possible your chicks were older than the one in the picture when you got them? I'm sure your chicks did look lot different than this one. I've noticed a lot of differences even in individual chicks I hatched out.
