Yes I have found raising chicks in the winter to be oh so time consuming. One year we had just moved them out to the hutch under lights (after being in the garage) and then a huge cold front came through and I sent one of my children to go get them or they would have died even with lights. We had to bring them in the house- not even the garage.Cute! I'll have to wait to get mine until spring though. Have to wait until our current chicken situation is sorted out in the fall. And I really don't want baby chicks shortly before the low temperatures start coming. What a bummer....
I have not gone through the winter with the Fayoumis yet- I am new to them. They were born this year, and I have not had a breed before through the winter with an extra large comb like that and small lightweight body (Mediterranean type). I have had Mediterranean breeds before (for example Leghorns) but not through the winter. So I have never dealt with frostbite.I see you have Minorcas and Egyptian Fayoumis. How much harder is it to take care of heat hardy breeds like that in cold water than lets say, an Orpington? Is it worth it to try a breed like the Andalusian in colder weather, or is it just better to stick with the breeds that are more adapted to my area?
