Blue Andalusian thread!

Would love the opinion of the breeders on this thread since I'm not familiar with this breed at all. This little roo is an Easter-basket cast-off that made his way to my in-laws.

Is he an Andalusian? I'm reading that some of each clutch can be black. He has the straight comb and coloring...thoughts?

No, not an andalusian. He is very short, he has yellow legs. He might be a black leghorn bantam, except that he is quite heavy in his weight (at least he looks that way in the pictures). He might be crossed with something heavier, like maybe a black orpington although he looks like a leghorn except for his weight and height.

He is definitely bigger than a regular bantam chicken. I'm not sure whether he would have been bigger if he hadn't been kept in a cat crate for the first five months of his life. *wry grin*

I'm glad we've been able to give him a happy life now but it's definitely a good reason why not to buy a chicken you aren't ready to care for. (He was an easter chick that someone in town got as a free-with-purchase special and they had no where to keep him. They finally decided to try to find him a new home so we took him in).

I didn't even think of check leg color in the breed descriptions.

I ran into a young man at the Stockton, CA show who had acquired all of the Andalusians from Superior. I got an absolutely huge male from him that was half Superior and half Roebuck lines. I think there is some Minorca in the mix. Hopefully its far enough back that I won't have Minorca traits haunting my hatches. With him was a hen that was all Superior line. They don't have great lacing but they have good size. She went broody for me this past late spring and hatched out some eggs from my other birds.

Several of my own birds in a specific family go broody for me every year... at least one hen has for the past 6 or 7 years.

John Hayes got many of his birds from Arthur Pfiel who was, from the information I could find, a "Master Breeder" of Blue Andalusians.

John has decided he is through breeding after this year as he has difficulty gettig around & can't do his chores any more. He asked me to dispose of his flock except for 12 young birds he kept just to be able to watch them. His wife will help him with caring for them.
I gave all his remaining Wyandotte Bantams to some junior exhibitors & divided the Andalusins into 3 groups. One group went to a fellow in Northern NY who is the Poultry Superintendant for the Franklin Couny Fair, A fellow in Western NY took a group & I'll be keeping the 3rd group. I really didn't plan to get back into Andalusians & don't need another large fowl breed but this is too important a line of birds to be allowed to disappear.
As to these bird's size the cocks I kept or distributed range from 6lbs 13 ounces to 7lbs 6ounces: the hens from 5lbs 4 ounces to one big old girl who tips the scales at 6lbs 4 ounces so they are right around standard weight with none reaching disqualifying weight in either direction.
All the ones I kept are laced right to the hock joint.

I have been interested in BA's for some time now. Saw a pair at our county far that proved to me how striking the breed was. I currently raise Buckeyes and Silver Spangled Hamburgs along with a couple Barred rocks and a lone Golden comet for eggs. Since I already have red birds and white birds, it stands to reason that I should add some blue birds to the flock.

Would you be willing to part with any of these birds or even some chicks in the spring?

wow, would you be willing to post photos. My DD(12 years old) has been showing the Andalusian breed for 3 years now at our county fair for 4-H. This year the judge told her that he liked the type on her cockeral and cock- but would like to see a smaller comb and would like to see bigger hens and pullets. She is also working towards better lacing. It will be intresting to see what this next year brings.

right where this smiley points (hope it comes out the same when I submit it) ... you click on it, then it asks what file (I believe) and then you go through your file and pick the pictures you want to load.
