Blue Butterscotch Call Ducks? *PICS ADDED*

I did notice the abscence of pigmentation on the shoulder of the drake (but wasn't sure because couldn't see too clearly) & the restricted mallard gene involvement did cross my mind.

Edited to add, yes, if it is restricted mallard involvement, then those birds without blue dilution (25%) should indeed resemble Appleyards colour-wise.

Cheers

I just noticed the times & you are right, & because I am a slow typer that would put me three minutes behind you two

In hindsight I also agree that there is more going on than these birds just being genetically similar to Saxony. The more I think about it, the more the addition of the restricted mallard gene makes sense, particularly with the reduced pigmentation evident on some of the ducks on second glance. And the drakes wing-fronts from what I can see above look white?

The difficulty being when some gene combinations closely mimick others & therefore confuse. Also the likelihood of unknown (unidentified) factors/modifiers? Still, light phase restricted mallard is a very acceptable (in fact likely) possibility. Would be interested in seeing the ducklings produced from a pair of blues. A percentage of little Appleyard look-alikes (colour-wise) may help to identify likely involved genes

LOL, you are really good with this color thing, Ross. We need to write a book together! LOL.

I happened to be lurking on the Australian/NZ board the other day (I am not a member over there, I should join though) and right as I was thinking- "Wow, that Runner is very similar in color to my Overbergs"... I scrolled further down and saw you had already posted a link to my birds! LOL, that is too funny. You have a really good eye for duck colors. I am impressed.

Ahhh, you saw that, I do hope you didn't mind but your birds were the first that came to mind (cause I liked them so). I don't get on there too often these days, but there are days when I could well do with your support (or knowledge)

And I have always been more than impressed with your posts, right from the very first I saw. If you look for it hard enough you will see that I have linked to it also

Hey, if you write that book, can you guys explain some of the genetic stuff without all the grids and everything first? I bought this book on duck colors and having a really hard time following it, I feel like I'm back in college chemistry or algebra class again.

Just plain old laymen's terms would be great before we get to the complicated stuff...I sure would like to understand every color, but when they get those grids involved I get lost in them.

Thanks for the help everyone, I am not sure I completely understand it but thanks. I never knew there was so much to call duck colors, I thought the blue fawns were a little complex but it keeps getting more complicated. If you two do write the book let me know I would certainly buy a copy. Also, duckluck what book are you talking about? I would like to get a book on duck colors but am not sure how it would transfer over to calls if it is written about large breeds since I think some of the names and colors may be different. So as it stands now, I will have to hatch some out and see what I get. When I do I will post pics of the progeny and let the experts decide what they are.
