Blue Copper and Splash Copper Marans Discussion

I use blacks blues and splash in my blue breeding program, I love the artistry of getting the blue just right from generation to generation by crossing splash in when the blue gets too dark or black when the blue is too light. Blue genetics will always be my favorite
We had good luck this year getting a LOT more copper on the cockerels by using our splash copper on BCM hens. Blue (and lacing) improved, and really liking the amount of copper on the little guys so far (with clear blue breasts, no leakage).

Oh, I agree, blue genetics are my fav too, as if we didn't already know, LOL! :)

Okay, another question for ya'll. :) The earlier discussion about breeding my BC male to the blue and getting more color in the offspring, brings me to the question of which male has the copper color that I want to use?

Definitely #1. I think the mahogany/copper bred to blues just about disappears. You want true copper color or even a bit of a halo when breeding blues. I'm going to be trying the same with a blue copper cockerel over black copper girls. He still lacks copper in the saddle (except for a bit here and there) but he's got a nice copper in the hackles. The girls are coloring in very nicely but won't be at POL for months, sigh. Patience!!

Number 1 would be my preference, but if you had to, the mahogany can be worked with, just have to balance the breeding with the right hens to get the copper to show

Thanks friends!
Vicki, #1 is the male that I showed you and Don the other day. I am really liking him, but then I see his brother, and think that Mh has to be useful somewhere, somehow. I am going to leave him (#2) in with the Black Coppers for now and single mate #1 with the Blue for a while to see what I can make by way of Blues with color. :)

Oh, another question!!!!!! Silly me, I think I have to ask it in the Black Copper discussion thread, but going to risk it here since he is photo'd here. Is #2 useful over pullets (blue or black) that do not show any signs of copper?
