<<Blue Copper Marans>> who won the ones on ovabid?

Tipsy is the bomb amongst bombs. I am trying to hatch every single egg she has laid. So far there are ten of her children brooding in my bedroom and she is setting on four more good eggs and one cracked one. I pulled her out of her brooder bin to stretch, eat, all that and was busy choring around and saw "her" up on the stool looking like she wanted back on her eggs, which I cover with my sweatshirt while she is off the eggs. I know that it is not neccesary, I just do it, CUZ I CAN"T HELP MYSELF, okay? Anyhow, after I put her back in and fastened the wire door, I noticed she was messing around the other end of the bin, over by her food and water, and not on her eggs like usual. YIKES!!! It was NOT Tipsy! It was Zig Zag the imposter!!! I pulled her out of there pronto and put Tipsy back asap, went back and filled a waterer, and came back and glanced at Tipsy and she was pecking the hay in front of her nest and I saw some mohogany fragments of eggshell hanging from her beak. Oh NOOoooo!!!! Zig Zag had carelessly trod the clutch and broken some eggs and Tipsy partook of one and saw that it was good! Quick! I wiped her beak down and made a VERY tasty raw egg substitute snack for Tipsy by soaking some pellets in fresh water and putting it where the egg had been. She really liked that and ate quite a bit of it and seems to have forgotten about raw eggs. Thank goodness! Just this morning I noticed an egg I had missed that was damaged from Zig Zag and I guess it is too late to do anything about it. It has a 3 written on it, which means it was laid and put under a broody on the third. Now, these marans eggs do seem to have a specially patented super thick membrane, and I can only hope for the best. I am leaving the egg. I am a "steep learning curve" sort of person, and will pass on my knowledge as soon as I learn the outcome.

I was laughing out loud until the story came to the part about the destruction and cannibalism.

It sounds like you are going to have a nice little flock of 2nd generation hens next year. That's very exciting.

I just can't believe the mis-information out on EBAY when people are describing their marans. One of them says it is "normal" for black coppers to produce wheatens ocassionally and "that a good breeder should disclose this". Actually, wheaten is a completely different E-Locus mutation that causes the extension of red and the reduction of black. The reason that wheatens pop up in black coppers is because some people can't tell the adult Wheaten and BC roosters apart and they crossbreed them. The chicks look different and the hens look very different, but the roosters are near identical in both colors. Good breeders don't have a problem with wheatens in their BCs because they don't crossbreed them.

I must admit, it is entertaining.

I won the 15+ mixed marans eggs on ovabid for $20. I will try to remember to post pictures when they arrive.
