Blue Egg Layers from University of Arkansas

Hey Jim,
Any updates on these birds yet?

UA has dispersed their flock. So the ones who has these will have to make due with what they have and acquire new blood from each other.

We ended up with 2 pullets. One Blue and one Black. We have 3 cockerels. 2 Blue and one White. All have a pea comb but the White cockerel and his is a single comb. All have slate blue shanks. If someone wants to make an offer on the White cockerel, we would be happy to sale him and ship via USPS.

No eggs yet, but should be any day now.

We plan on using both males and and rotate them back and forth to the pullets. This should keep fertility high and genetic diversity a bit better.

To be honest, they do look like these. But will try to get some photos later today or this weekend.

We may use the White cockerel some until we sell him. Get the most genetic diversity possible.

Wait . . . what???

I really wanted some of the brown ones that laid blue eggs, but I thought they were ONLY available to 4-H'ers? What happened to those??? Anyone breeding them?

I was trying to be patient - did we all totally miss out?

The brown ones (wild type) that laid blue eggs were being used for research by a grad student so no eggs were given out of that type. I haven't talked to Dr. Bramwell in a little while those may still be up there. The ones that are no longer being raised up there are the blue color blue egg layers.

If you could talk to anyone there, I would greatly appreciate it. What I thought was interesting was (if I remember correctly) the Brown Layers had a single upright comb, and it was my understanding that the blue egg gene is closely related to the Pea comb. I really want to introduce the Blue gene to my flock but I've worked really hard to for two years to get upright combs and FINALLY bred the funky combs out!

So if these were available, I would be very interested. It would allow me to get blue eggs without having to revert back to pea combs! I find the upright combs allow my birds to be sexed earlier. However, I'm not within driving distance, if they were pickup-only. I may have a friend of a friend who could do it, though? Or pay for shipped eggs pr chicks, if that was possible.

Aloha- have you thought about legbars? They have single combs and lay blue eggs, they have the barring you don't like but if you got a legbar hen or two, all the resulting pullets will be 'normal' and the barred cockerels can be sold off
