Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

I haven't scanned through all 644 pages of this thread so I apologize for this is a redundant question. BUT I'm hoping y'all can help me. Why don't people desire the black or splash laced red wyandottes? Is there no market for these chicks? To those who breed them - correct me if my genetics is wrong - 50 % of what you hatch is unmarkable or unusable product in the breed/selling sence.

THey are desirable for back yard people, just not breeders as even though the cross produces 100% blues you run into the risk of it diluting out the blue over time. I personally only breed blue to blue for that reason and also per advice from Jerry Foley.

But crossing a BLRW roo to a BLRW hen will produce BBS redlaced wyandottes, right?
A BLRW is the breed, they come in blue, black and splash colors but they are all still Blue Laced Red Wyandottes as a breed. But yes is you cross a blue to a blue you get the possibility of all 3 colors. I know it's a bit confusing and takes a while to get the gist of it all. Here's some information to help understand the genetics better.

Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash

Blue X Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash

Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black

Splash X Black = 100% Blue

Black X Black = 100% Black

Splash X Splash = 100% Splash

Blue Laced Red (BLR) Wyandotte

Blue-laced red is not an accepted Wyandotte color ...yet. They do have a COD (certificate of development) and can be shown in exhibitions. In my area, they are showing up in increasing frequency as both a backyard and exhibition breed. I don't currently have any, but would really like to get some!

The standard for BLRs calls for a darker phaeomelanin color than the gold standard. This is controlled by rufus factor - a co-dominant gene series rather than a single gene. BLR Wyandottes may also have the Mh allele rather than mh+. To intensify color, sometimes breeders cross in a redder breed, but then line breed selecting for the darker red shades. I think my 'too dark' golds are most of the way there!

More importantly, the Blue gene is needed to shift the eumelanin markings from black to blue. Blue is a co-dominant gene which is not sex-linked.

BlBl = splash-laced (lacing a very pale shade of blue, sometimes resulting in some feathers being blue and some white - not showable)
Blbl = Blue-laced (correct blue lacing on a red groundcolor)
blbl = Black-laced (black lacing on a red ground color -- basically a gold lace, though the ground color is more red than the preferred)

As a co-dominant gene, blue-lacing does not breed true. That means if you breed two blues (Blbl) you get 1/4 black, 1/2 blue and 1/4 splash. This is the preferred breeding of those working to develop the color -- resulting blacks and splashes are culled.

If you are trying to raise chicks to sell and want to ensure that all the chicks will be blues, then breed black-laced (blbl) to splash-laced (BlBl). All chicks from this cross will be blue-laced (Blbl).

Breeding blue-laced (Blbl) to splash-laced (BlBl) gives half blue-laced and half splash-laced.
Breeding blue-laced (Blbl) to black-laced (blbl) gives half blue-laced and half black-laced.

I'm just getting going on Blrw breeding but the black lace are staying in my yard. Love the red and black colors together.

I keep mostly blues but last year I had more blacks so I also grew out a nice dark splash cockerel. He is over a blue and black BLRW. I sold ALL my splash the first year I had them as I only wanted to work with blues but that was a HUGE mistake with the few breeders I had. Now I sell the black and only a few of the other colors.

Some new pics of my BLRW's :) I am excited to start getting eggs from the pullet but don't expect her to start in the middle of winter. I think they were 19 weeks here, 23 weeks now.

Cockerel #1

Cockerel #1 with pullet

Pullet, I love her! Hoping the red gets a bit darker with age. She looks more brassy here than she really is, these were shortly after sunrise.

This is more accurate color.

Cockerel #1 w/ pullet

Cockerel #2 he was a slow featherer so is not as mature looking as cockerel #1, however I really really like his darker blue and deeper reds and he is my favorite at this time.

Cockerels #1 and #2

Close up of lacing coming in on cockerel #2

I also have a splash (seen) and black laced 10mo old pullets.
