Hellooooo Sam! Yes I would say that's a boy for sure, very large and red comb and wattles for 6 weeks of age. A hen wouldn't get that red until 5-6 months right before she lays eggs.Sorry for another "Him or Her" question but I'm not familiar with either roo's or this breed. Up to this point I've only had hens. I purchased 11 fertile eggs of assorted breeds to put under my broody Buff Orpington just to see if she'd hatch them. Well, only one hatched - reportedly a blue laced red wyandotte - and we've named it "Sophie". I'm beginning to think we may have been premature in picking that name! Sophie is 6 weeks old - will be 7 weeks old in two days. Below are two pics of her. Hope they'll enable someone to tell if we should have gone with "Sam"!

My Wyandotte roosters are the nicest boys I have ever had!
I believe with a wyandotte you wouldn't butcher before 5 months....keep in coop/run, no free range and feed high protein and some corn the last couple weeks....I'm not an expert, just from what I have readSo ordered 9 chicks and of course got 7 roos and 2 hens. They hatched 2nd week of April. I have been trying to sell them on craigslist and other places but no takers...which leaves me with one option, and it is a tasty one.
When is the right time to butcher the roos? I dont want them to get to mature where it could damage the meat but I want them big enough to have a quality amount of meat to make their death worth it...plus they are eating alot of feed right now which is getting expensive. Im just not sure what age is the best to butcher, especially for Wyandottes,
Im planning on keeping my 2 best roos for the winter and the other 5 must go.
thanks for any input.
