Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Also looking for advice from any BLRW breeders about my cockerels. looking for opinions about type, and pairings I have 11 to choose from: 3 are splash, culls 2 are blacks, considering pairing 1 of these with my mature Splash hens. 6 are Blues. The one I think has the best type is very dark blue, nearly black. cockerel #1 - dark blue, almost black. considering pairing him with the 2 best blue females above. I think he has the best type. cockerel #2 - I like his even blue color. 2nd runner up to pair with my two best Blue females. not sure about his type though. cockerel #3 - I like his even blue color and his type, but he is significantly smaller in size than all the other males. also, he has a weird white stripe in his saddle and tail feathers. it seems to be growing out. I wonder if something stunted his growth and caused that white line in his feathers earlier in life? cockerel #4 - this is the black cockerel I think looks best, these are not good photos of him but he was hard to catch. alternative idea - pair cockerel #1 (very dark blue) with the splash hens instead of this black. [rule] Lastly... look at this cockerel with no lacing! I think he has good wyandotte type but his color is weird. He is all blue with no lacing at all. he is going to be culled but I had never seen anything like this before so I thought I would share him.
I am by no means an expert on wyandottes but I would probaby use #1 as u said over your blue hens. He would help darken up the blue lacing in his offspring. #2 I would keep him on stand by as a backup. I really like #3 as he has an excellent wyandotte shape and the "heart" shape. Im not sure exactly if I would cull him out completely unless he is really small. He would be a good candidate as a breeder if you wanted to focus more on shape than color. I would probably cull the non lacing roo. They are lovely birds though!

You're welcome! And Happy New Year to you too! I just ordered some BBS Wyandotte chicks so I can start breeding them as well. I too will be extremely selective of my breeder birds and only use the best trio or quad (1 roo to 2 or 3 hens) for breeding and the rest will be used as layers or meat.

Hello all,
I am new to this thread, but but have been on BYC for some time. I am currently chickenless, but I have had some hens in the past couple of years. I absolutely love BLRW and always have ever since I first laid eyes on them and probably always will! Just thought I would stop by and get aquainted with the thread. Hoping to start up again soon and maybe in the next 5 years get breed specific with this color type. Hope everyone is having a great new year!

Welcome to the thread. I too have a new found love of this breed. BLRW's have it all.. beauty, good egg laying and meat producing birds, and they are gentle giants. And I do mean giants. Our eldest roo is every bit of 12 pounds, and he's just 13 months old. He's a big ol boy. lol

thanks for the welcome! That is a really good sized boy! I miss having BLRW so much, my avatar is my one and only set of little beauties i had over a year ago. I went in on a big order with someone from my state thread who ordered them from a hatchery out in Iowa i think. Out of 5 girls, I ended up with 2 or 3 splash, and 1 dark. Also at that time i was trying my hand at incubating and had ordered some hatching eggs off ebay that were supposed to be "Foley" Lineage. I knew it was a gamble from the get go to even try to incubate them, several of them did have intact air cells when they got to me, but none of them ever hatched. You live and you learn though.....
