Blue Orpingtons

Is a blue Orpington a separate colored type of Orp or is it a cross between a black and a white Orp? I'm new to chickens and have 25 buff Orp chicks but I love the look of the blues. How do I get some?

Blue Orp is a color. Some people just have Blues, some have Blue, Black , Splash together. Several people on here, including myself have hatching eggs.

Do blues breed true or do you have to breed a white to a black? I tried your website and it didn't work for me. Where are you in Georgia?

Black and white bred together will not get you blues. When you breed blues you can get blue, black or splash chicks.

Blue is a particular gene that behaves a certain way. One copy of it dilutes black to blue, two copies dilutes blue to splash. It's not like mixing paint, which is what some seem to think.

Blue breeds the same in any breed whether it be in Jersey Giants, Orps, Marans, Cochins, etc..

If you breed a blue with a blue you can get 50% blues, 25% blacks, 25% Splash results ...

Here is the BBS (blue, black, splash) percentages:
(In case you don't know ... blue x blue means blue rooster over blue hen, etc ...)

Blue x Blue = 50% Blue 25% Black 25% Splash

Blue x Splash = 50% Blue 50% Splash

Blue x Black = 50% Blue 50% Black

Black x Splash = 100% blue

Splash x Splash = 100% Splash

Black x Black = 100% Black
