Blue/red Orps?? Genetics & possible projects?

I am way in over my head here but am enjoying the thread. ;o)
I did want to throw at you that it does appear that only the males are getting this red coming through., have not seen it on any of the females.

Also you can't see it in the pics on my page but my Blue Orp roo has a lot of brown, in him. His hackles and his tail feathers especially, even his body is more a brownish/grey. Is this normal?? I can post a recent picture if anyone things it is relevant.

Theresa

Edited to say that all the parent birds are from the same breeder.

Tim,

Are you saying (on the side

) that homozygous E/E birds do not leak red or silver, even when melanizers are absent?

Quote:
No, E/E birds also need melanizers to insure no leaking of red or black. Birds that are black and brown (e^b) that carry one dark brown gene (Db) will show red tips on a black feather on the chest. Birds that are black and not E/E will show red or silver when columbian restricted.

tberggren,

post a pic.

Here is a pic of the Blue Orp.
The Splash hen is in with him and my Black Orp.

He is now 11 months old, there was no visible brown in the 8 month old shots on my web page. Of course there is also the possibility that he is sun bleached (although there has not been much sun here in NY this summer, lol)
