Hi folks
I have one Blue Star that I got from an excellent local hatchery. Other than their description, I can't find much about them online. So far she is a very sweet hen and beautiful blue-grey and fairly small compared to her giant cuckoo Maran sister. Anyone else have a Blue Star, and can you tell me if they're a proper breed or a hybrid mix of certain parents etc? It's very hard to find any info on them!

Hybrid. Likely sexlinks due to having Star in the name
interesting. I figured they were a hybrid but it's so hard to find info! does anyone know what they are mixed of to make a hybrid, or how does that work? I don't know much about sex linked chicks other than you can sex them at birth by colours :)

Different hatcheries have different "recipes" for making sexlinks.

Some sexlinks were developed for the commercial egg industry and others are targeted more to the backyard flock market. The former will be excellent layers, the latter may be more focused on looks and on the needs of people who CANNOT have a rooster. :)

Blue sexlinks would be made just like Black Sexlinks, but with the addition of the blue gene to turn black into blue.

They're sexable because the barring gene is on the Z sex chromosome, so crossing a barred hen with a not-barred rooster produces barred sons and not-barred daughters. The barred males have a light spot on their head when they hatch. People usually just want the females, so you don't see the males as often.

This mainly. Even I have a few recipes for the sexlinks I make. Still have yet to name them though for the offical release next spring

Ideal Poultry in Cameron, Texas, says their "Blue Star" are a cross between Blue Andalusian and Barred Rock. I've ordered 3 for delivery in March to see how I like them.
