BO Labored Breathing, Crackling, Wheezing and light sneezing

Thank you, Nsampsel. She has resumed to her normal behavior and I returned her to the other girls (who remain symptom free) yesterday. I will continue the antibiotics, as you suggest. It is very difficult to know she is getting the right amount of Terra Vet 10. Trying to give it to her in a syringe is very difficult. I'm wondering if it is okay to sprinkle 1/16 of a tsp twice a day on some watermelon and give it to her that way. I will take your advice, wholeheartedly and continue to give it to her longer (10 days). She does still have some heavy breathing, that seems to make her rump heave up and down (more than normal) but not raspy, and it does not slow her down, as she is foraging, running around and being active. Thank you very much for your advice.

Will do! I will try it tonight. Nobody can tell me chickens aren't smart and don't have a memory. Pearl starts bagawking and running off the minute she sees me coming with the orange hand towel (to wrap her) and syringe!! Haaa! I will thank you for her now. Operation watermelon to be executed by evening!

I'm sure I'll have a compliant chicken on my hands!

Aw, I hope your little hen improves. I'm going through something similar - my red star (Harriet) has been sneezing and coughing and today I noticed that she was making purring sounds sometimes when she breathed. I dosed her with Tylan 50 and intend to do that for the next 3 or 4 days and hopefully that will clear it up.

I gotta tell ya - she was not happy about that syringe.

Thank you, Kimquat. I also read about VetRx being helpful, if she continues with the breathing/respiratory issues. Pearl really did turn around within 24 hours of the antibiotics. Next time, if I'm only dealing with one sick hen, I will do the Tylan. It is hard to treat one chicken with a "add to water" antibiotic, especially if they don't feel like drinking and you have to use the syringe. At least with a shot, you know they are getting the meds they need. The interesting thing though, is that for fear of similarities to gape worm symptoms, I dosed her with Safegaurd (and the entire flock, as they have yet to be wormed) as well (she had more breathing issues it seemed, no liquids, film or eye drainage). So, I don't know what was wrong, but one of the two things worked, and from what I understand, the antibiotics generally work with 24 hours. I posted some other links on here for disease symptoms above, so check those out too. I hope Harriet feels better. It is a sad state to see a sick hen, I know. She should turn around soon.

Thanks so much for the information, really. I'm paranoid about worms and all manner of sickness and it's nice to be able to share with folks who are going through the same thing. I have a friend who raises chickens and also suggested that I give her some grated garlic, as well. I'll try anything. She hasn't been laying these past couple of days, either, even though she's acting perfectly normal. I'm definitely going to pick up the VetRX just to have around in case we need it.

Keep me posted about your hen. My fingers are crossed for the both of us.

She may be molting. They won't lay while molting. I have been adding ground cayenne pepper to mine's feed for the past 3 weeks now & it has helped them get their rears back in gear. It kicked the molt up too, which allowed them to get back to work quicker.

I hadn't even thought of that. :O Thanks for the info!
