Bob Blosl is gone

I was away at a show in Nevada this past weekend, but Steve and a couple others emailed me about Bob. I appreciated them taking the time to do that. Bob was a very special guy and as we all know, had a special talent in being able to talk chickens online (or anywhere else) and not annoy folks like some of us do. His calm folksy way was enjoyed by all. Where I was like Atilla the Hun online, he could keep his cool and work his way through differences of opinions. He and I talked about this many times and I told him many times that he possessed a very special skill in that regard. He was a very hard working humble man.....a very special man that did more for poultry than many would ever do and he did it with joy in his heart.

Bob did not care about wins or "chasing points" as he called it.....his passion was promoting the Poultry Fancy.....which he did every day.

The Poultry Fancy has lost a very special person. Bob would not care about this, but I am recommending that he be inducted into the American Poultry Association Hall of Fame. He certainly deserves that distinction. I am still in a state of shock. Rest in Peace my friend.

Walt Leonard
Thank you Walt and he always spoke very highly of you and thought a lot of your opinions of poultry in general. You are right about Bob's feelings about the Hall of Fame but I agree that he deserves it and THANK YOU for your help in getting that achieved.

When I mentioned to friend of mine that I want to breed certain rare breeds she told me to get in touch with Bob. So, I started reading his posts, the threads he started to "get to know him". I was blown away by his passion, his enthusiasm and he was so humble, so down to earth. I thought "what a wonderful person". I was looking forward to talking to him, but my plans are all future dreams though, 2 years from now, if all goes well. The time isn't right, I'm going to leave the country again, no point talking to him now, I thought. I didn't want to waste his time, talking about things I'm hoping to start with 2-3 years from now only, because I can't see the point of doing them now. Now I wish I had... I missed the opportunity to talk to that great man and be even more inspired than I already am, just from reading his posts here. Because I take time for granted, there's always tomorrow, next week, next year, right? Let's get through this month and then we'll see, there is no rush, is there? Saturday morning I logged on here and the first thing I saw was "Bob Blosl died..." Time waits for no-one.

So I decided to stop wasting time and get started now. Not next year, or the year after, but now. I'll start by reading through Bob's writings, his posts here, his articles, his website and learn from him and continue to be inspired by him. He may be gone, but he left us his thoughts, his passion, his teachings. We have a lot of him still here. Wonderful posts that made me smile and dream and always will. Then there's the articles he wrote.

I've also decided to add heritage RIR to my "to do" list, to breed those wonderful chickens. For Bob, for the breed, for the Fancy, for the love of poultry.

The poultry world and this community lost a wonderful man, but a part of him will live on here, if we work on keeping it going. Keep his threads going and keep sharing knowledge with the newbies. Work on keeping the breeds going that he was so passionate about. Spend a few extra $ and buy Heritage instead... Whether you do it for the Fancy, or for Bob, or for the breed. Just do it.

Took me a bit of time getting over the shock of his death.......I hope each and every one of us remembers him. He could not have come at a better time than being in here with all of us!

That is my plans! I'm looking into getting heritage Aussies now. Robert sure will be missed that's for sure!!! Such a nice man!

Oh no! I just meant him a couple weeks ago on here. He was going to mentor me in getting my flock into real RIR. The ones I have are not. We talked about him lining me up if he could find them with a good breeder here in Michigan.

Now I more than ever want my true RIR which will now be triple purpose instead of dual purpose!!!!

I think Fred is going to help me with birds in spring. Now I just have to do the RIR as an honor to Bob. He is the reason I found out my hens were not RIR in the first place. So HE spurred my research trying to find out what SOP meant and what it is for any chicken I might want.

I started out wanting RIR (got production) and still want to do the 'natural' breed as I call it. I guess he will mentor me from all his past posts.

God Bless his family. He was down to Earth and REAL just like the Chicken breed he mentored on. THE REAL THING!!!! Sorely missed by even brand new acquaintances like me.
