If he's not going to show, why the need to get them from the top breeder? No need to waste precious good quality birds on a backyard breeder. Urch's birds, or those from any hatchery will be fine.

Why would it be a waste? He may breed them in his back yard and really enjoy them. Do we sell our quality birds to someone who will only show them? I may not sell my BEST birds to someone who just wants really nice birds but I wouldn't doom him to hatchery quality birds for the reasons stated.

It seems to me that if it's someone that's serious about having them and wants good ones, it'd be a good thing, especially since so many breeds and varieties are disappearing, if they want them and hatch some it's another pocket of resistance to the breed disappearing entirely. What's the better placement, someone who shows but is apt to change breeds suddenly on a whim, especially if it's a breed that is winning, or someone that wants good birds of a breed because he genuinely wants that breed even if they don't show?

I'm as big of a proponent of poultry shows as you're likely to find, but keeping standard bred poultry alive and around has to be the top priority doesn't it? Without poultry there's no poultry show.

@Gallus. Nice. At first I wasn't drawn to the Darks, and still do ultimately prefer the LIghts,, but there's a subtlety to the Darks that I find ever more appealing.

Mark is a super nice guy and his birds are just awesome. Pics don't do them justice. His lights are always show stoppers, although I love the darks, here are the SC that I have from him.

Those are gorgeous animals. You almost never see the Dark's (as a matter of fact, I don't know that in 19-20 years in poultry that I've ever seen a Dark Brown LF Leghorn in person), it's a neat color pattern.

I think the dark browns are stunning! They're not bright and flashy like the light brown leghorns but that's ok. I like something a little easier on the eyes, I guess... thus my Andalusians.

There was a point in my life all I wanted was Andalusians in both large and bantam, but they seem to be a cursed breed for me. I shipped some from the east coast once and lost almost all the chicks in transport. Brought a trio of bantams back from Ohio, and within a week the first raccoon attack in 5 yrs took the head off the male. Hatched eggs from an auction, no male. So I just bred Blue in every other breed I could! LOL

I agree Lacy. I don't know where NARRAG was coming from with that statement.

I don't plan to show but I still want quality birds - there are many more reasons to have good quality birds, than just for show purposes. In fact, isn't this whole thread all about the reasons to maintain the quality of the heritage breeds?

i don't show but i want my cubalayas to match the apa standard. i also want them productive, healthy and vigorous. hens that brood their own chicks, able to rustle their own food at times, aware of predators, sustainable.
