Bob Blosl's Heritage Large Fowl Thread

I always give them a couple chances, if they haven't flogged me. Even Isaac bit me a couple times when he was about 14 weeks old. After his little scolding, he never did it again, which means to me, he was testing boudaries and not actually exhibiting true aggression. The age has lots to do with whether or not it's really something to seriously worry about. Maybe your boy just needs some aversion therapy.

Scott - please don't give up on him yet, I had a time with Luke for about a month before he settled down and was respectful - he was testing me to find out who was head rooster and I won. I picked him up and carried him around every time he bit me, and I even held him upside down the last two times. It worked, he turned into a doll baby.

Did you get my pm? I can still do it, we are still going.

Yes Beth, I got your message and THANKS

Scott are you talking about the Columbians from Canada ? I have to get back with Frank on that.

Scott your male needs about 1 1/2 mg of Valium at bed time and he will be just fine.

Just kiding I dont know what to tell you if he can improve your line maybe you can mate him to two sweat heart kind females then raise the males up look for a male that looks like him with good color and type but does not have the mean streak in him or less of a mean streak. Then mate this male back to the two females again. Raise the young males up again and then see more improvement and pick a male that has jumped up again in color and type but is more docile.

Then take the best male of that year mate him to some other females that have excellent type and do this again. I think in three to five years you could breed this out. Based on our article in our newsletter the female gives the type and the male gives the color in this color pattern. So maybe it will work.

Does your strain go back to the Tommy Stanley line?

Does Joel Gilman still have this color pattern?

You sure got good comments on the subject.

Tamara these are pretty good hatchery birds. Just think how many thousands of chicks are sold each year and dont even come close to thier color and breed type. They can be breed up and maybe in a year or so we can find you some eggs to hatch to cross into them. You just never know I may find a lost strain of large fowl out there like I did today with the Rhode Island Reds from Calif that are in South Carolina. Who would ever think something like this may show up. Heck maybe somebuddy has some of my old Mohawk Reds that I sold years ago to them and they are under ground and I dont remember who they are. I am happy for you and that is some thing nice to look at out your back door.

Joel no longer has them. As far as whether they are Tommy Stanley line birds I do not know.....I have sent a message to the breeder to see if he can tell me. I think some of his stock came from Tom Richardson

THANKS!!

one of my buckeye cockerels has recently started fighting with me. I know he has many flaws and I do have a GREAT replacment for him I want to know should i cull him? or could he still grow out of it? and he also is small for his age.
I can't wait to get my Barred Rocks!

If you're planning on culling him why deal with it....I have found that the small ones are the feistiest and that my scale is my best friend. My freezer pen just keeps getting fuller I'm having chicken for Thanksgiving since my turkey could use a little more time his new name is Christmas.....
