The nice thing with the partridge rocks they keep there broody trait well. Out of those I have left I have marked a few of those that raised this years chicks. I had a broody all threw the spring and summer. Sometimes all nest boxes full, which is why this year I am expanding coop with a breeding coop and adding 8 more feet on main coop. I seriously thought of getting an incubator after we lost 5 hens in a week. But seeing how the broody raised chicks grew up and knowing what a mess having chicks in the house is I did not. Hubby was against it also saying "you bought them so you did not have to do it in house again".

Robert, what you laid out is what I had planned on for this flock. I will be very much single breeding the one male and doing a test breeding or 2 on the other. He does not look as nice at all but I have one or 2 hens that might correct his bad points. My plans were to see what these two threw and then bring in an outside line in 2 years. One reason I joined the Plymouth Rock club so I had the connections.

Tamara you can get some eggs someday from Beth after she gets some of Joels birds. His color to me was something on the picture taken at the State Fair of one of his large fowl hens. Just remember this is a slow process. You will learn alot just raising your birds and hatching agian next year and you can always cross your strain with Joels birds as my friend Anthony is planing to do the same as there are so few strains of these bires in the USA in the first place. bob

This is an awesome thread I love the idea. I have some old RIR that came from Jimmy Swanson a master breeder of RIR in FL Im in Iowa and not many of the old birds around here. I would love to find someone to trade some eggs or chicks with to give me some new genetics in the flock. My birds are large, deep red, have the red on the shanks and are very correct. I have rose and single comb.
